9 TV shows coming in September that are actually worth watching – from a TV Editor

Even without the furore of Meghan Markle potentially joining season two, The Gentlemen’s return is definitely worth a conversation at the office water cooler. Starring The White Lotus star Theo James as a Duke turned drug baron, watch this Guy Ritchie favourite sit smugly atop Netflix’s trending TV shows for weeks to come.

In his quest to adapt every serial killer’s life story, Glee creator Ryan Murphy is back with his murderous anthology series, this time focusing on a famous female killer from the 1800s who was acquitted of the axe murders of her father and stepmother. 

Although the Monster series is occasionally too much for me (I watched the first episode of the Jeffrey Dahmer one before I remembered I had free will and didn’t need to know more), you can’t deny that Ryan makes seriously good TV – and the Lizzie Borden instalment will be just as popular as its predecessors, I’m sure.

Colin from Accounts star Patrick Brammall is returning to his dramatic roots with a police drama about a dispatcher who hears a distress call from a teenage girl who he is convinced is actually his daughter Maggie, who disappeared 11 years earlier. Sometimes Apple TV shows can go under the radar so make sure you don’t miss out on this one.

Speaking of Patrick Brammall, the Australian star is booked and busy as he returns to his brilliant comedy show for a third and final outing. Starring alongside his real-life partner Harriet Dyer, who also co-wrote the show, the pair play a couple who date after accidentally injuring and then adopting a dog – the titular Colin – and it has been on top of every comedy list ever since. I adored the first two seasons and totally respect their decision to keep audiences wanting more by delivering a top-tier season three – and I will be lapping up every single episode this September.

There’s nothing I love more than a good Agatha Christie tale, and I’m very much here for this modern retelling, especially as the trailer looks like everyone appearing in it is having a great time. If you enjoy a cosy crime and aren’t too precious about your Agatha Christie adaptations, I think you’ll enjoy this BritBox offering.

Blue Lights feels like Line of Duty’s cousin. The police procedural makes you stress and shout at the TV while watching it, has a host of characters you’re rooting for and are never sure are going to survive – and keeps you wanting more the second the series is finished. I’m expecting nothing less from the new season!

I don’t think I’m being over the top here when I say that Slow Horses is one of the best things on TV, and even writing that it is back in September has given me a buzz as we return to Slough House and the likes of River Cartwright, Catherine Standish, and their ever-disgusting boss, Jackson Lamb (beautifully played by Gary Oldman). This season is even more thrilling, as an old face from season one returns (I won’t give the game away, but the trailer already did)!

Despite the headlines earlier this year that Tom Hardy had left the show over fallouts with Helen Mirren, it appears that the pair – and Pierce Brosnan – are stronger than ever as they return to the hit crime family drama. The show can only get better with the addition of the talented Emma star Johnny Flynn and Minx’s Ophelia Lovibond.

This show feels like Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are finally giving the people what they want by starring as fictionalised versions of themselves who discover that they might actually be biological half-brothers thanks to Matthew’s mother (played by Holland Taylor) letting slip a decades-old family secret. Sign me up!
