Infanta Sofia is getting ready for the next stage in her life. This Monday, the daughter of King Felipe and Queen Letizia is moving out of Spain, marking the first time she’ll be living abroad as a college student. The youngest daughter of the King and Queen and younger sister of Princess Leonor is kicking off her studies at the Forward College in Lisbon, Portugal, where she’s studying Political Sciences and International Relations.
Portugal has long been a special place for the Royal Family. It was the home of Juan de Borbon for four decades and was the home of King Juan Carlos throughout his childhood. Felipe VI has shared his love of Portugal numerous times over his life, with it being the place where Princess Leonor made her first official trip by herself.
A new route for Infanta Sofia

Now, Infanta Sofia has opted to go to university, with Forward College being linked to the University of London, and having campuses in locations like Lisbon, Paris, and Berlin. The school teaches different courses per city, with their degrees being recognized by the most important organizations, including the London School of Economics.
Ifanta Sofia seems to be following in the footsteps of Infanta Cristina, who also studied Political Sciences and International Relations. Her aunt and sister of the King studied at the Complutense University of Madrid, graduating in 1989. She continued her studies later, acquiring a Master’s Degree from New York University.

Per the Royal House, Sofia’s career must be useful to the institution and must be located somewhere close to Spain, that way she can still fulfill her duties for the country. Once she has a degree, Infanta Sofia will be better equipped to participate in social, political, and cultural events related to her country, invaluable tools when it comes to her role as a member of the Spanish Royal House.
A specialized education
Forward College is a prestigious institution with a narrow admission rate. The school prides itself in its small and specialized classrooms, with there being only 15 students per class, with them having nationalities from up to 40 different countries. Most of the lessons are taught in English, having optional classes in Portuguese, French, and German.
The cost of the school is priced at around 18,500 Euros per year.
