A psychologist reveals what your go-to lipstick shade says about your personality

For many of us, putting on lipstick is second nature. A bold red before a big meeting, a subtle nude for everyday wear, or a touch of gloss for that effortless, well-rested look.

At the other end of the spectrum are those who go months without so much as glancing at the lipsticks buried in their make-up bag—skipping them even for weddings or special dinners.

It might seem like a simple, even superficial habit, but a single swipe of lipstick actually raises fascinating questions about self-perception, confidence, and how we present ourselves to the world.

When we posed this to psychologist, relationship mentor, and podcast host Patricia Sánchez, her perspective went far beyond the usual beauty clichés.

There’s psychology behind the shade of lipstick you choose

Drawing on years of experience in self-esteem and self-image, she explains that it all comes down to the emotional motivation behind our beauty routines.

What psychology says about women who always wear lipstick

A classic red lip carries decades of symbolism—a subtle statement that seems to say “Today, I’m going all in,” even if every woman experiences it differently.

For psychologist Sánchez, the habit can be linked to our internal state, though she cautions against treating it as a rigid personality trait. “Rather than a personality trait as such, I’d say there’s a clear connection between self-esteem, empowerment, confidence, and the emotional state of women who wear lipstick every day,” she explains.

“A striking shade like red or burgundy projects a woman who is confident, grounded and determined—someone who isn’t afraid to make her mark,” says the expert

The ritual of applying make-up also reflects taking time out for oneself. “Looking after yourself, and specifically wearing lipstick, shows that a woman prioritises time for herself, feels connected to her femininity, and wants to accentuate her best features,” she says.

Lips hold a unique symbolic weight, and drawing attention to them can be a way of visually taking up space with confidence. “Lips are a naturally captivating, feminine and distinctive feature,” Patricia adds.

“A striking shade like red or burgundy projects a woman who is confident, grounded, and determined—someone who isn’t afraid to make her mark,” the expert notes. Yet that very same look can stem from entirely different motivations. “The exact same true-red shade can sometimes mask a need for attention, a search for external validation, or underlying self-doubt,” she clarifies. That’s why, she insists, the real insight comes from asking a much more revealing question: “What is the motivation behind it, and where is it coming from?”

While bolder lipsticks project strength, opting for softer tones doesn’t mean settling for a lesser form of femininity. “Lighter, more subtle colours often reflect a calmer, gentler nature—but beneath that calm lies a quiet, enduring strength,” the psychologist explains.

Our stage of life also comes into play. Patricia notes that many women naturally shift between shades depending on their frame of mind or current life chapter: “A woman might switch from one shade to another depending on where she is in her menstrual cycle, her mood, or the broader stage of life she finds herself in.”

What psychology says about women who never wear lipstick

The rise of natural, “Clean Girl” beauty has completely reshaped the conversation around aesthetics. Fresh, bare faces, minimalist routines, and an embrace of the “I woke up like this” mindset are all part of today’s beauty landscape.

From Sánchez’s perspective, women who forgo make-up entirely may simply be expressing a comfortable, easygoing relationship with their appearance.

At other times, however, there can be a deeper emotional layer tied to a desire to blend into the background. “It often stems from a need to stay under the radar—a subtle fear of drawing attention or standing out,” the psychologist explains.

Whether you wear a little or a lot of make-up, it’s about the relationship you have with yourself, says the psychologist

According to Patricia, seemingly practical choices can sometimes mask a form of personal self-erasure.

Phrases like “I look fine as I am” or “Make-up just isn’t for me” can carry very different weight depending on the mindset behind them.

Ultimately, the expert insists, it’s never about whether you wear a little or a lot of make-up—it’s about the relationship you have with yourself.

Lipstick and self-esteem: the real psychological debate

The conversation changes entirely once make-up stops being an accessory and becomes an emotional crutch. “Lipstick doesn’t boost your self-esteem or personal confidence; the power to feel magnetic lies within you,” says the psychologist.

Her outlook centres firmly on core self-worth. “First, you reclaim your inner confidence—based on who you are without props or dressing up—and then you wear whatever make-up you fancy,” she maintains.

One woman may feel empowered in a bold red, while another feels just as strong bare-faced. One might use make-up as a creative outlet, while another chooses total simplicity.

Both choices tell distinct, valid stories. “You can wear natural make-up and look gorgeous. You can wear bold, eye-catching make-up and look gorgeous. Or you can wear no make-up at all and still look gorgeous,” the psychologist sums up.

“Choosing to wear make-up mindfully means enjoying it without letting it define your worth as a person”

Psychologist Patricia Sánchez

The simple act of wearing lipstick speaks to identity—how a woman chooses to present herself to the world and how much space she feels comfortable taking up. Above all, it reflects her relationship with the reflection in the mirror.

“Lipstick is just another way of expressing how you feel in your own skin, the energy you radiate, and how you see yourself,” she explains. “Beauty doesn’t come from a bottle or a lipstick bullet—it comes from your confidence, your sense of self, and how much you prioritise peace and self-care in your daily life,” she concludes.
