Adrian Grenier is weighing in on the growing chatter about a possible reboot of Entourage.
“I would love to do the show again, obviously,” Grenier, 49, exclusively told Us Weekly on Friday, March 13, while promoting his new film Self Custody, which is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
Still, the actor admitted he has mixed feelings about bringing the hit HBO series back.
“You know, I’m torn because it’s an iconic show that defined an era. I don’t know how we would do that today, because we’d have to address a lot of things that are current.”
Grenier — who also appeared in The Devil Wears Prada — said that while revisiting the series could be tricky, it might also create some interesting opportunities.
“But that could… that’s an opportunity as well. I think it can’t be the same thing, because it was so tied to that time. It’s a time and a moment and a vibe that I don’t think you can replicate.”
The original Entourage debuted on HBO in 2004 and followed rising Hollywood star Vincent Chase, played by Grenier, and his tight-knit group of friends — including characters portrayed by Kevin Connolly, Kevin Dillon, Jerry Ferrara, and Jeremy Piven. The show was inspired by Mark Wahlberg’s own rise in Hollywood and was created by Doug Ellin. It ran for eight seasons before wrapping up with its series finale in 2011.
During its run, the show picked up multiple Primetime Emmy Awards and Golden Globe Awards. A follow-up film, Entourage, later brought the crew back together and earned $49.3 million at the box office. Even though the show was very much a product of its time, Grenier thinks the characters could still work in a modern setting.
“The characters, I think, are still relevant, and I think the way they would deal with modernity is interesting as well,” Grenier told Us. “You know, Johnny Drama (Dillon) as an avatar could be funny, you know? As an AI. There’s a lot of room for fun within those characters.”
And if fans start demanding a revival, he says the cast might have to listen.
“So yeah, I want to do it. Are you gonna start a movement? Are we gonna get the fans to demand it? If the fans demand it, we have to do it. That’s just how it works.”
Of course, getting a reboot off the ground would still take more than enthusiasm.
“I think we need the script and we need the money,” Grenier explained. “That’s how it works. That’s just the biz. Maybe we ask AI.”
While artificial intelligence might not actually be the answer, Grenier’s Self Custody director and co-star Garrett Patten already has an idea for how the story could pick back up.
“Here’s my idea: They say that Vinny Chase disappeared to Texas to live on a ranch for the last 10 years, and the guys go back to revive him and bring him back to Hollywood, and the gang gets back together again to take over the time,” Patten told Us Weekly on Friday. “They find Adrian, he’s got a beard, and he’s living out on the ranch, and they clean him up and bring him back to Hollywood.”
For now, though, the reboot talk is still just talk. However, fans craving a little Vincent Chase energy can still catch Grenier in his latest project.
“If you loved Entourage, you’re gonna love Self Custody,” Grenier said.
