It’s been a wet and windy winter so far this year, and Yorkshire shepherdess Amanda Owen has been struggling with the impact of the “severe” weather conditions on her Yorkshire Farm home.
Situated in Swaledale near Ravenseat Farm, Amanda’s farmhouse is named Anty John’s, after its former owner Anthony John Clarkson, and the Our Yorkshire Farm star took to Instagram to share her plight with the recent weather conditions and its impact on her land.
Severe conditions on the farm
In one video, Amanda spoke to the camera as she hid in a feed bin while rain pelted through the barn. “It is just so bad out there,” she said.
“I’ve actually been trying to load up hay and I’m using a pallet on top of it to hold it all down so it doesn’t blow away. Ugh, oh, what a night. The water is just unbelievable.”
She continued: “It’s pouring with rain and there’s water pouring through the back of the building. It’s come under the bale and I am currently building myself a little barricade, literally just to try and channel the water through the building and then exit the building as quickly as possible. It seems to be working. Ugh, that’s okay. What can you do?”
The shepherdess then shared a follow-up video while taking refuge in her car, captioning the post: “I wanted the rain to stop and it did…”
Shaking her head, the Our Farm Next Door star said: “Just, yuck,” before panning the camera around to show the snow-covered ground and the persistent snow that continued to fall.
“Yes it did finally stop raining… then started snowing,” she wrote. “A whole day spent trying to restore order on the farm after a severe battering. #shepherdess #farm #spring #snow.”
Fans offer their support
Fans were quick to take to the comments to share their support for the shepherdess and commend her for her dedication despite the harsh conditions.
“Bless you – you are incredible,” penned one person, while another said: “Relentless for you all… get in by the fire when you can xx.”
Meanwhile a third wrote: “Your dedication is inspiring – thanks for keeping the farm safe through such weather changes!” while a fellow farmer added: “It’s been horrid here too, horrendous rain, wind, snow and then baltic wind. Let’s pray for sun.”
Amanda Owen’s Yorkshire Farm
Amanda first bought the farm with Clive, her husband at the time, in 2020. While the couple decided to end their relationship in 2022, they continued to co-parent their nine children and charted their journey and the renovations on Our Farm Next Door: Amanda, Clive and Kids.
After previously sharing the difficulty of making changes to the Grade II listed home, Amanda issued a progress update in a February episode of the series.
“The house is, in a way, split in two,” she explained. “Basically, the house end is listed. The barn end is not listed. So the main house needs to be done with blind plaster, and the barn end, we can just plasterboard and skim it. It’s a faster, quicker, easier, cheaper job.”
She continued: “There’s been a real shift now in where we’re at with the whole building project. We’re now at a stage where it is about the interiors and basically how you’re going to style it.”
However, the journey hasn’t been smooth-sailing. “There’s a bit more sort of onus and pressure on me to kind of make decisions, and that’s really hard,” she admitted. “I don’t know quite what I am doing, so what I am doing is relying on other people to come up with suggestions whilst I say, ‘No’.”
