Before Andre Agassi was married to fellow tennis legend Steffi Graf, he was in a relationship with another star. The eight-time Grand Slam winner was married to actress and model Brooke Shields.
But, the famous couple split in 1999 after just two years together. Both Andre, 56, and Brooke, 61, have gone on to have successful marriages and multiple children with their now partners, but the heartbreak of their divorce still lingers for fans of the couple.
When did Andre Agassi and Brooke Shields get together?
The A-list couple met in 1993 through a mutual friend at a tennis match in Africa, where Brooke was filming a movie. Due to their intense schedules, Andre started courting the actress through “long rambling faxes about life and God and the strange burden of fame and overpowering parents,” Brooke wrote in her 2014 memoir, There Was a Little Girl.
Three years after they started dating, Andre asked Brooke for her hand in marriage while the couple was on a vacation in Hawaii. On April 19, 1997, the two tied the knot in a lavish ceremony at St. John’s Episcopal Chapel in Monterey, California, in front of 100 guests.
The heartbreaking reason Andre Agassi and Brooke Shields divorced
After just two years of marriage, Andre and Brooke divorced in 1999. The decision was heartbreaking for both of them. In her 2014 memoir, the Endless Love actress detailed her and Andre’s split.
© Getty ImagesShe revealed that Andre confessed he had been hiding an addiction to crystal meth from her. “He explained to me that for the first whole part of our relationship, he had been addicted to crystal meth,” Brooke wrote.
In 2009, Andre opened up about his drug use and how he lied to tennis authorities when he failed a drug test. He shared with People at the time: “I can’t speak to addiction, but a lot of people would say that if you’re using anything as an escape, you have a problem.”

Almost 30 years since their split, both Andre and Brooke are living happily. While Brooke admitted in her documentary, Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields: “I’ve never reconnected with him,” the two went on to have successful individual relationships.

The athletic couple are parents to two children – Jaden Gil, 24, and Jaz Elle, 22. Jaden is competitive like his parents and played baseball at the University of Southern California before joining the MLB Draft League. Jaz is a dancer and a horseback rider who enjoys spending time outdoors.
