On February 19, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor is experiencing a birthday he never imagined. He knew he would turn 66 without titles, estranged from the royal family, and surrounded by scandal, but he did not expect to be arrested on this notable date.
In the morning, he was taken into custody at Sandringham, at Wood Farm, the residence he moved to after being evicted from the Royal Lodge. The arrest, as well as the subsequent search of this and other properties, was carried out as part of an investigation in which he is considered a suspect of misconduct in public office.
After more than ten hours in police custody, a development that has drawn major international attention, he was released. The former Duke of York was photographed leaving Aylsham police station (Norfolk) around 8 PM CET (7 PM UK time).
Wearing a green polo and jacket, he was seated in the back of a car, leaning back to avoid the cameras. No members of the Windsor family accompanied him.
As confirmed by Thames Valley Police, he has been released under investigation. Authorities also reported that searches in Norfolk have concluded, although operations continue in Berkshire, where Royal Lodge is located.
Thames Valley Police confirmed that a man in his sixties from Norfolk was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of misconduct in public office. He has since been released under investigation, and authorities stated that searches in Norfolk have been completed. No further updates are expected at this time.
The reasons for his arrest:
Following the declassification of the Epstein case files, police are examining the alleged misuse of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s position as the third son of Elizabeth II in a public office, a serious offense under British law that could carry life imprisonment, being considered a form of high treason.
Documents also indicate that the financier may have arranged private meetings, trips, and introductions by leveraging Mountbatten-Windsor’s position, contacts, and influence for personal gain.
King Charles III reiterated his willingness to cooperate with the investigation. He emphasized that the matter would be handled through a proper, fair, and thorough legal process by the appropriate authorities and that the law must take its course.
He also affirmed that his family would continue to carry out their duties and public service while the investigation proceeds, without making further public comments on the matter.
