Anna Paquin is speaking out about the experiences of young performers in Hollywood following the death of former child star Hayden Panettiere.
Paquin, who began acting as a child and won an Academy Award at just 11 years old for her performance in The Piano, addressed the issue in an Instagram post Friday. The actress reflected on what she described as the dangers facing young performers, particularly the way some children in entertainment can be sexualized at an early age.
Her comments come amid renewed attention on the pressures that can accompany growing up in the public eye.
Paquin Questions Hollywood’s Protections
In her post, Paquin referenced Panettiere as well as fellow former child stars Michelle Trachtenberg and Daveigh Chase, who also died before the age of 40.
The actress questioned whether the safeguards put in place to protect young performers are actually enough to shield them from the darker sides of the entertainment industry.
“We were not as protected by the ‘systems’ that look great on paper, as we are supposed to be said,” Paquin wrote.
While she did not go into detail about her own experiences, Paquin’s comments appeared to come from the perspective of someone who entered Hollywood at a very young age and experienced the industry firsthand.
Paquin also reached out to other former child performers, describing them as members of a “strange small club.”
“You are worthy of support no matter how our industry made us feel,” she wrote. “Literally DM me. I believe you and I will stand by your side.”
She Clarifies Her Comments
Paquin later edited her caption to clarify that her comments were specifically about children working in the entertainment business who are prematurely treated as sexual objects.
“I’m not implying damage is not done outside of the context of entertainment,” she explained.
She acknowledged that the larger issue extends beyond Hollywood, but said addressing those broader concerns would require “a longer post for a different moment.”
Her clarification came as her original message prompted discussion about the unique vulnerabilities faced by children who grow up working in movies, television and other parts of the entertainment industry.
Child stars often begin their careers before they are old enough to fully understand the implications of fame, public scrutiny and the expectations placed on them. As they get older, some have spoken publicly about the difficulty of transitioning from being a child performer to an adult while remaining under intense public attention.
A Message to Former Child Stars
Paquin also explained why she referred to Panettiere, Trachtenberg and Chase by their initials in her original post. She said the decision was simply because of Instagram’s space limitations and was not intended to carry any additional meaning.
Her decision to directly address other former child actors gave the post a more personal tone, particularly as she acknowledged the shared experience of growing up in an industry that can blur the boundaries between a performer’s professional and personal life.
The actress’s message ultimately centered on offering support to people who may have struggled with their experiences after growing up in Hollywood.
Panettiere Died at 36
Paquin’s comments came five days after Panettiere died at age 36.
The actress was found unresponsive in South Carolina on Aug. 16 and was pronounced dead after advanced life support efforts were performed.
