Bodrum has long been synonymous with glamorous beach clubs and lively summer nights, but after my first visit last September, I quickly realised there’s so much more to this Turkish coastal hotspot than its party reputation.
During my trip, I stayed at Avantgarde Refined in Yalıkavak, a beautiful coastal town just outside Bodrum that offers a more relaxed, refined take on the destination. Known for its elegant marina, scenic coastline and sophisticated yet laid-back vibe, it perfectly captures Bodrum’s balance of luxury and authenticity.
If you’re looking for somewhere that combines laid-back luxury with genuine Turkish charm, this is exactly where to base yourself. After my stay, I can confidently say it’s one of the most stylish, welcoming and thoughtfully curated places to experience Bodrum from.
A boutique hotel with a warm, personal feel
From the moment we arrived, the team at Avantgarde Refined made us feel genuinely looked after. The service throughout our stay was warm, attentive and personal, the kind that makes a trip feel extra special without ever feeling over the top.
Designed by award-winning Wangan Studio, the hotel is elegant and contemporary, with a calming neutral palette and subtle design details that let the sea views do the talking. Its private white-sand beach and crystal-clear waters create a peaceful escape, while a private speedboat offers stylish transfers and experiences along the coastline.
The overall atmosphere is relaxed yet refined, it’s a place where you can fully unwind while still feeling connected to Bodrum’s vibrant energy.
Sunset sailing and marina evenings
One of the highlights of our stay was a sunset boat ride around Yalıkavak Marina, arranged by the hotel. Watching the sun dip below the horizon from the water was truly magical and gave us a beautiful introduction to the area.
Afterwards, we explored the marina itself, filled with designer boutiques, stylish restaurants and a lively evening buzz. It’s glamorous without feeling overwhelming and the perfect spot for an evening stroll, dinner or a bit of shopping.
Slow mornings and sea-view yoga
The next morning started with an early yoga session on the hotel’s seafront deck, easily one of my favourite moments of the trip. I love starting the day with movement, and with the sound of the waves in the background and soft morning light over the bay, it was the most peaceful way to wake up.
The hotel has its own private yoga instructor and guests are free to join the sessions, which adds a lovely wellbeing touch to the stay. There’s also a small but fully equipped gym for those who like to keep on top of their routines while travelling.
Delicious dining with a view
Food is another standout, breakfast is served daily with a generous spread of hot and cold dishes, fresh fruits and juices, a beautiful start that sets the tone for the day.
Lunch, snacks and dinner are served in the same sea-view setting, making every meal feel relaxed yet special. The hotel also hosts seasonal restaurant pop-ups that change throughout the year, bringing in different chefs and cuisines and keeping the culinary experience fresh and exciting.
This summer, guests can expect the return of Hodan, the Michelin-listed fine dining concept by Chef Çiğdem Seferoğlu, known for its immersive sunset dinners and thoughtful culinary storytelling. Meanwhile, Poco Matcha, Türkiye’s leading matcha brand, will also return with its signature conscious caffeine rituals.
More casual yet equally exciting pop-ups are planned too, including Zmash Burger and the iconic Bayramoğlu Turkish Döner, as part of the hotel’s ‘Legends of All Times Turkish Gastronomy Series’ celebrating some of the country’s most beloved culinary names.
Beyond the hotel, we also enjoyed a memorable dinner at Beynel Bitez, a Michelin-guide Turkish restaurant set among olive trees with soft, warm lighting and a magical outdoor atmosphere. Sampling their signature dishes while learning about the menu from the owners themselves offered a deeper taste of Bodrum’s food scene.
Wellness, spa and cultural experiences
The hotel’s small but beautifully designed spa and gym add another layer to the experience. We tried one of the signature massages and it was exactly what you want on a relaxing escape.
Another day, we headed into Bodrum for a guided cultural tour arranged by the hotel. Having a personal guide brought the history of the area to life and gave us time to explore Bodrum town centre for some shopping afterwards.
We explored some of the destination’s most iconic landmarks, including the ancient Bodrum Amphitheatre with its sweeping views across the bay, Bodrum Castle and the charming old town centre filled with shops, cafés and local boutiques. We also stopped at a scenic viewpoint overlooking the coastline where, on a clear day, you can see all the way across to the Greek island of Kos.
The verdict
Avantgarde Refined Bodrum is more than just a beautiful place to stay, it’s a thoughtfully curated lifestyle destination that blends design, gastronomy, wellness and warm Turkish hospitality.
For a first visit to Bodrum, it couldn’t have been a more memorable introduction. Whether you’re looking for a stylish summer escape, a shoulder-season retreat or a relaxing wellness break, this boutique hotel in Yalıkavak delivers it all with effortless charm.
It’s also a wonderful option for families. During our stay, there were several families enjoying the hotel, and the intimate size of the property creates a safe, relaxed environment where parents can truly switch off. With activities for younger guests and plenty of space to unwind, it strikes a lovely balance between refined luxury and family-friendly ease.
Room rates start from around £250 per night, making it an accessible option for a quiet-luxury escape in one of Bodrum’s most desirable areas. For those looking to explore more of Türkiye, the Avantgarde Collection also includes a sister property in Cappadocia, offering the same design-led, experience-driven approach in one of the country’s most magical landscapes.
