Bad Bunny is officially an Emmy winner!
The Puerto Rican superstar took home his first Primetime Emmy for his massive Super Bowl LX halftime performance, adding another major accomplishment to an already stacked résumé.
“The Apple Music Super Bowl LX Halftime Show Starring Bad Bunny” won the Emmy for Outstanding Variety Special (Live), beating out the other nominees in one of television’s biggest live-event categories.
And apparently, one Emmy wasn’t enough. The halftime spectacular racked up seven wins during the ceremony, making it one of the night’s biggest winners.
A Halftime Show With Plenty of Star Power
Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl performance was anything but a standard halftime show.
The production brought together an elaborate mix of music, choreography, visual effects and surprise celebrity appearances, creating a spectacle that was designed to celebrate Puerto Rican and Latino culture while putting Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio’s personality front and center.
Among the special guests were Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin, who helped turn the already star-studded performance into an even bigger moment.
The show also went beyond the typical parade of celebrity cameos. Bad Bunny and his creative team incorporated a real-life wedding into the production, along with appearances from authentic small-business owners, including Los Angeles favorite Villa’s Tacos.
The unexpected touches helped make the performance feel less like a traditional concert and more like a celebration of community, culture and everyday people.
Seven Emmys for One Epic Production
The Outstanding Variety Special (Live) trophy was just one of several awards the halftime show picked up.
The production also won Emmys for music direction, choreography, sound mixing, lighting design, technical direction/camerawork and directing.
With that many wins, it’s safe to say the team behind the performance had plenty to celebrate.
The recognition also highlights just how much work goes into pulling off a Super Bowl halftime show, where performers and production teams have only a limited amount of time to transform the field into a massive entertainment spectacle — and then get everything packed away just as quickly.
Jay-Z Adds Another Emmy to His Collection
Bad Bunny wasn’t the only big name taking home hardware.
Jay-Z, who served as an executive producer on the halftime show, earned his third Emmy for his work on the production.
The rapper and entrepreneur has been involved with the Super Bowl halftime show through his partnership with the NFL and Roc Nation, helping bring some of music’s biggest stars to the championship game’s massive stage.
Celebrating Everyday People
While the flashy production and celebrity cameos grabbed plenty of attention, the creative team wanted the performance to communicate something much bigger.
Creative director Harriet Cuddeford previously explained to Variety that the show was designed around the idea of celebrating everyday people, humanity and community.
The goal was to show Bad Bunny’s appreciation for his roots and the people who helped shape him while highlighting the importance of Latino culture on one of the biggest stages in the world.
“Benito” is known for embracing his Puerto Rican identity, and that authenticity was a major part of the halftime show’s creative direction.
Rather than making the performance solely about Bad Bunny the global superstar, the production aimed to make room for the people and culture he represents.
Another Major Win for Bad Bunny
The Emmy marks another major milestone for Bad Bunny, whose career has continued to expand far beyond music.
From becoming one of the biggest recording artists in the world to making history on the Billboard charts, starring in major films and wrestling appearances, the entertainer has consistently found new ways to make his mark.
Now, he can officially add Emmy winner to the list.
And considering the scale of his Super Bowl halftime show, it looks like the Television Academy was more than ready to give Benito his flowers.
