Eugene Mirman is opening up after being involved in a serious car crash earlier this week in Bedford, New Hampshire.
The comedian, who has voiced Gene Belcher on Bob’s Burgers since 2011, shared an update on Friday, thanking people for their support following the accident.
“Thank you so much for all the well-wishes, love, and kind messages from friends and strangers,” Mirman wrote on social media. “I am extraordinarily thankful to the heroic people that pulled me from the car and to the warm, kind, and talented staff at the hospital that cared for me and got me on the mend! I am thankful beyond words to be here and doing relatively alright, all things considered.”
He added that he had been offline while recovering, but still managed to joke about the situation.
“I don’t have my phone, so haven’t been online much,” he wrote. “I do not recommend my method of decreasing screen time. If you’re a friend who sent a kind, loving message, you should know that it was hard to not respond with, ‘I’d love to be on your podcast.’ I love you all and please take care of yourselves.”
According to the New Hampshire Division of State Police, Mirman was driving a Lucid Gravity when it crashed into the Bedford Toll Plaza on the F.E. Everett Turnpike on March 31. Witnesses called 911 after seeing the vehicle on fire with someone trapped inside.
Troopers arrived at the scene around 11:55 a.m. local time. Mirman was pulled from the burning car through a window by a state trooper assigned to the security detail of Kelly Ayotte, who happened to be passing by at the time.
Officials said Mirman, 51, who was identified in reports by his birth name Yevgeny, was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
Col. Mark B. Hall praised the trooper, who has not been publicly named.
“Certainly, their actions were heroic in what they did,” Hall said. “Without hesitation, they put themselves in danger to render aid to someone who was in need of it.”
No charges have been filed, and the crash is still under investigation.
On Bob’s Burgers, Mirman voices Gene Belcher, the son of Bob (H. Jon Benjamin) and Linda (John Roberts), and brother to Tina (Dan Mintz) and Louise (Kristen Schaal).
Outside of the long-running animated hit, Mirman has also appeared in shows like Flight of the Conchords, where he first showed up in 2007, along with Delocated, Archer, and a variety of other projects across both live-action and animated TV.
