“Growing up in a small town like Dois Riachos, you stood out. But not for your talent. No, you got weird looks and mean comments every day just because you were a girl. A girl who loved football,” she wrote. “There were no other girls in town playing football.”

After kicking off her career at the World Cup at the age of 17, Marta was recruited to play in Sweden, becoming the first Brazilian female soccer player to play out of her country. She’s played in many countries since, including the US, where she played on the Los Angeles Suns, FC Gold Pride, and the Orlando Pride, where she currently serves as the team’s captain, leading them to multiple cups and titles.
