Bruce Willis’ wife of 17 years, Emma Heming, got candid about the difficulty of celebrating her milestone 50th birthday while caring for her husband, who is currently suffering from frontotemporal dementia (FTD).

The 71-year-old was first diagnosed with aphasia in 2022, before this was amended to an FTD diagnosis in 2023. FTD is a brain disorder affecting the frontal and temporal lobes and has no known cure.

Bruce suffers from the variant that affects language, making it difficult for him to communicate with his loved ones.

Emma shared that she was hesitant to celebrate her 50th birthday

Emma has been open in the past about the danger of burnout in caregiving, and shared on the Making Space podcast that her situation hit even harder on her 50th birthday.

“I, you know, have not really been in the celebratory feelings of late,” she admitted.

“I was unsure if I really wanted to do anything, but I had a friend of mine who kept sort of pushing and saying, ‘You know what? You don’t wanna miss out on your 50th. You have to celebrate in some form or fashion.'”

“And I really sat with that, and I thought about it,” she continued. “And I thought, ‘You know what? I don’t wanna look back and think, why didn’t I celebrate 50?'”

Emma’s big bash

Her chosen celebration included eating tacos and drinking margaritas with her close friends and family. “On top of it, it was the Knicks final. About 98% of the people there were Knicks fans. It was a great celebration,” Emma recalled.

The former model added that she knew Bruce would want her to celebrate the special day, in spite of his progressive disease.

Emma revealed that she celebrated with her friends and family

“I always wrestle with it. I think guilt is something that I am always carrying,” she explained.

“But I’ve learned that it is really not helpful. I always go back to: What would my husband want for me? He would want me to have a big fun bash. He would want me to celebrate my life with my friends and family. That is what I always think about when guilt of any sort comes in front of me. And I’m really happy that I did.”

FTD has heavily impacted Bruce’s speech

Emma shared an update on Bruce’s health on the podcast, revealing that the family still had their ups and downs. “Life still isn’t easy. It’s very hard. It’s very heavy,” she shared.

“But I have learned to also allow those cracks of light to come in, to experience joy, experience laughter, without being guilty about it. Our people want us to experience our lives to the fullest.”

Bruce’s family are incredibly supportive

Bruce welcomed two daughters with Emma: Mabel, 14, and Evelyn, 12. He is also close with his three eldest daughters, Rumer, 37, Scout, 35, and Tallulah, 32, whom he shares with his ex-wife, Demi Moore. Rumer, Scout, Tallulah and Demi are incredibly supportive of Emma and her girls, and often help out in caring for Bruce.

The Die Hard star now lives in a house separate from his family to accommodate his around-the-clock needs and to provide a quiet environment for him, while allowing his daughters to live a relatively normal childhood.
