The BBC has unveiled a first look at its upcoming drama, Two Weeks in August – and it looks like a must-watch.
The series, which features a star-studded cast led by Call the Midwife‘s Jessica Raine and Bergerac actor Damien Molony, follows a group of friends reuniting for a summer holiday in Greece. What starts off as a dream getaway soon turns into a nightmare after an illicit kiss.
The first-look images show a glimpse at the sun-soaked series, showing Jessica’s Zoe on a sunny stroll with Damien’s Dan, as well as Antonia Thomas as Jess relaxing by the pool.
I’m definitely marking my calendar for this one. Not only is the show made by the multi-award-winning Various Artists Limited, which produced BAFTA-winning shows, I May Destroy You and Such Brave Girls, but it’s penned by Catherine Shepherd, whose writing credits include The Buccaneers and The Shrink Next Door.
Plus, Tom George, who directed the BBC’s comedy hit This Country, and Matthew Moore (Colin from Accounts) are also on board. So it’s safe to say that viewers are in safe hands!
What is Two Weeks in August about?
Set in Greece, the “witty and painfully relatable” story centres around Zoe, who goes on holiday with her family and friends to “rediscover joy in her life”.
But after an illicit kiss turns her dream vacation into a nightmare, Zoe begins to act on her deepest desires and the holiday she hoped for becomes a reckoning for a group of adults who refuse to grow up.
The synopsis continues: “When they discover they are trapped on the island, and become faced with real life-or-death situations, the group soon turn on each other to find out who is to blame. Is Zoe responsible for the drama and destruction around her or, as heaven turns to hell, are bigger forces at play? We are in Greece after all, the land of the ancient Gods.”
Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, described the series as “irresistible”. “There is no better cast to bring Catherine’s Two Weeks in August to life,” she said in a statement. “You might not want to find yourselves on holiday with this group of characters, but watching their reunion unfold across eight sun-soaked episodes will be irresistible.”
