Cameron Diaz’s comeback to acting is still going strong — and her latest project has her filming on the streets of New York City.
The 53-year-old actress was spotted on set Friday, March 13, shooting scenes for a new romantic comedy in the West Village. Diaz was seen outside the Olive Tree Cafe & Comedy Cellar, bundled up in a long black leather coat with a scarf and black lace-up boots. She kept things classic with her blonde hair styled in loose curls.
The film, which doesn’t have a title yet, is being directed by Stephen Merchant. According to Deadline, Diaz will also star in the project alongside Merchant, 51. The movie is being produced by Amazon MGM Studios, with Merchant directing from a script he co-wrote with John Butler.
The rom-com follows a British workaholic, played by Merchant, who works at a luxury New York hotel and needs a wife for appearances. He ends up striking a deal with a struggling stand-up comedian, played by Diaz, who’s in desperate need of health insurance.
What starts as a simple arrangement quickly gets complicated. The two agree to a fake marriage for practical reasons, but their business-like partnership eventually blossoms into an unexpected romance.
Diaz’s return to the big screen comes after she stepped away from acting for about a decade. She officially made her comeback with the Netflix action-comedy Back in Action, where she starred alongside Jamie Foxx. The film premiered in January 2025.
When Diaz first announced she was returning to acting back in June 2022, she shared her excitement on Instagram and gave Foxx credit for helping bring her back.
“@iamjamiefoxx only you could get me back in action! I can’t frickin wait it’s gonna be a blast!”
And it looks like Diaz isn’t slowing down anytime soon. In July 2025, People reported she had signed on for another project — the Netflix action-comedy Bad Day, directed by Jake Szymanski. In that movie, Diaz will play “a single mom fighting to keep one little promise to her daughter on the absolute worst day of her life,” according to the film’s official description.
She’ll also be returning to one of her most beloved roles. Diaz is set to voice Princess Fiona again in Shrek 5, which is currently scheduled to hit theaters on June 30, 2027.
Before making her Hollywood return, Diaz had stepped away from acting after playing Miss Hannigan in the 2014 film Annie. During her time away from the spotlight, she focused on family life — marrying Good Charlotte guitarist Benji Madden and welcoming two children together, daughter Raddix and son Cardinal.
