Camila Alves and Matthew McConaughey have spiritually uplifting experience after meeting Pope Leo during Vatican visit

Camila Alves McConaughey shared a memorable moment in Vatican City this week as she and husband Matthew McConaughey met Pope Leo XIV during his weekly general audience at St. Peter’s Basilica.

The Brazilian-American model, entrepreneur, and philanthropist joined the Oscar-winning actor for the special meeting while the couple continues spending time in Italy, where Matthew is filming his upcoming Netflix movie Positano. The visit combined faith, family, and their European summer.

The couple greeted Pope Leo XIV during the Wednesday general audience in Vatican City on August 5. Photos from the event show Matthew shaking hands with the pontiff while Camila smiled beside him as they shared the brief but meaningful encounter.

Pope Leo XIV, who became the first American pope, has continued the Vatican tradition of welcoming visitors from around the world, including well-known figures from entertainment, sports, and the arts.

The Vatican Visit Is Significant

Although the meeting lasted only a short time, it reflects the McConaugheys’ longstanding interest in faith and family.

Matthew McConaughey has spoken publicly for years about his Christian beliefs and the role spirituality has played throughout his life. In recent interviews promoting his 2025 book Poems & Prayers, he discussed his evolving relationship with faith, describing both periods of deep belief and moments when he questioned it before returning to a stronger spiritual foundation.

“I’ve leaned on it in the hard times. Later on in life I learned to lean on it in the good times. With great success, I needed faith to give me humility at times, and then slowly and still I’m learning how to have that humility but still not lose confidence, because I had a bad relationship with humility,” he said on Hoda Kotb’s Making Space podcast. “I’ve also had my agnostic years where I did not believe,” he said at the time. 

“Where I fully said ‘It’s on you, Matthew. Self-reliance is key and that’s what you gotta be. Put your hands on the wheel. You’re responsible. That’s it.’ I came back to God and I did hear him applauding, going ‘Thank you for the courage to say it’s on you. I need more people not just relying on fate. I need more people going, it’s about fate but it’s also about free will,’” he continued.

Adding: “It’s about fate but it’s also about responsibility and having your hands on the wheel, and so I was able to laugh at that. And of course if you’re a believer and you have faith in God, [He’s] always there waiting on the other side of the door whenever you’re ready to come back.”

Camila Alves McConaughey has also emphasized family values throughout her career, balancing work as a model, entrepreneur, and founder of the lifestyle platform Women of Today while raising the couple’s three children.

The Couple’s Summer in Italy

The Vatican visit comes after several months spent in Italy.

Matthew has been filming Positano, a Netflix thriller co-starring Zoe Saldaña. The movie follows a jewel thief who becomes involved in a high-stakes heist, with much of the production taking place along Italy’s picturesque coastline.

Away from the film set, the couple has embraced Italian life. They were photographed enjoying date nights in Rome earlier this year, while Camila also attended Dolce & Gabbana’s prestigious Alta Moda fashion event in Sicily, sharing glimpses of the craftsmanship and artistry behind the luxury showcase on social media. 

A Relationship Built on Family

Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves first met in 2006 before marrying in 2012. Together they have three children: Levi, Vida, and Livingston.

Beyond Hollywood, they’re known for their philanthropic work through the Just Keep Livin Foundation, which focuses on helping teenagers lead healthier, more active lives. Their public appearances often center on charitable causes, family milestones, or significant cultural events rather than frequent red carpet outings.
