Catherine Zeta-Jones is shutting down any idea that her two kids haven’t worked to get what they have.

The actress, 56, shares her son Dylan Douglas, 26, and her daughter Carys Douglas, 23, with husband Michael Douglas, 81. Over the years, both Dylan and Carys have ventured into show business like their parents.

Carys is a musician and has also appeared in several short films over the years. Dylan briefly worked in the political journalism sphere, hosting a radio show in the lead-up to the United States 2024 presidential election, but is now a working actor as well.

In a new interview with The Times, the Entrapment star explained that her kids were “plugging away” at their respective careers, with Carys even venturing into assistant directing. She noted: “My daughter wanted to be Amal Clooney for a while. But you have to go with your dreams, your passion.”

Catherine said that she and Michael both wanted the kids to pursue acting because they both enjoyed it and were “good” at it. “Otherwise Michael and I would be the first to go, ‘You know what? Maybe law school looks really good.'”

She also countered the idea that her two kids were simply “nepo babies” and why she found it more limiting. “It’s hard for them to forge a way forward on their own,” she opined. “This horrific phrase ‘nepo baby’ is horrible because these kids didn’t ask to be born into this, they’re finding their own way in life.”

Catherine also looked back on how her own career began at such a young age, appearing on stage as a teenager before breaking into the mainstream in the United Kingdom with the show The Darling Buds of May when she was 22, and then achieving international recognition with The Mask of Zorro seven years later.

Both Dylan and Carys have found their footing in the entertainment industry as well

“Until I had my own kids, I didn’t realize the pressure, how big that was for a young adult – well, a teenager,” she said. “I had a sniff of the joy of being in the theatre so young. I went, ‘I want to do this. I can’t imagine going through school and A-levels in Swansea.'”

Dylan previously spoke with FAULT Magazine about his venture into political commentary and contributing to the discussion surrounding Gen-Z voters given his own family legacy and the idea of himself as a “nepo baby.”

The actress called the “nepo baby” label “horrific” when it comes to her kids’ work

“Often, people already have perceptions of who I am before they even meet me,” Dylan shared. “In a world where I’m often being defined by everything under the sun but who I am as a person, I’ve always been driven to be myself and to stay true to my beliefs and principles.”

Noting the “high stakes” of the political environment at the time as the driving reason for him to step into the spotlight, he continued: “I felt we were turning our backs on so much of what makes America special.”

“…these kids didn’t ask to be born into this, they’re finding their own way in life.”

“The rhetoric I was seeing, some of the policies being floated—I couldn’t believe this was who we are as a nation. That was very scary, but it also inspired me to do everything I can to stay true to and fight for the ideals I was raised to uphold.”
