Céline Dion’s long-awaited return to the stage came with plenty of emotions.

The superstar singer, 58, officially returned to full-concert mode Saturday, Sept. 12, performing her first complete show in more than six years. Her live career was put on hold first because of the COVID-19 pandemic and later because of her battle with stiff-person syndrome.

Dion kicked off the opening night of her 26-show residency at Plenitude Arena, formerly known as Paris La Défense Arena, in Nanterre, France.

And she barely made it through the opening seconds without getting emotional.

Céline Couldn’t Hold Back the Tears

Dion opened the concert with her 1998 song “On Ne Change Pas,” but she had to pause just moments after beginning the performance.

The singer appeared visibly overwhelmed as she wiped away tears and placed a hand over her heart. She also brought her hands together in a gesture that appeared to express her gratitude to the fans who had waited so long to see her perform live again.

After taking a brief moment, Dion composed herself and finished the song before moving into another ’90s favorite, “Destin.”

She then stopped to speak directly to the crowd, addressing fans in both French and English.

“There are many of you here tonight from all over the world. Thank you so very much for coming,” Dion told the audience. “If it’s your first time in Paris, I hope you fall in love with it, just like I did. Finally, it’s amazing we are all together.”

‘I Made a Promise to Come Back’

Dion then reflected on the promise she made to herself and her fans to return to the stage.

“I made a promise. I made a promise to come back, to be back on stage,” she said. “So here I am, singing for you and singing for me, singing life!”

The emotional moment continued as Dion thanked her fans for standing by her through the years.

“Thank you so very much for your support, your patience and if I may say so: I am everything I am because you loved me,” she said.

She then transitioned into her 1996 hit “Because You Loved Me,” making the song’s lyrics feel especially personal after her lengthy absence from the stage.

A Long Road Back to Live Performing

Dion’s last full concert took place in March 2020 at New Jersey’s Prudential Center. Shortly afterward, the remainder of her tour was postponed because of the pandemic.

The rescheduled dates were eventually canceled following Dion’s 2022 diagnosis with stiff-person syndrome, a rare and progressive neurological and autoimmune disorder.

The condition can cause muscle stiffness, mobility problems, painful spasms and breathing difficulties, forcing Dion to step away from live performances while she focused on her health.

Although she has made a handful of major public performances since her diagnosis, Saturday’s concert marked a much bigger milestone.

Dion famously performed “Hymne à l’amour” from the Eiffel Tower during the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony. Later that year, she also took the stage at the 1001 Seasons of Elie Saab fashion show in Saudi Arabia.

But this time, she wasn’t just performing one song. She was back for an entire concert.

How Céline Prepared for Her Comeback

Dion has been putting serious work into getting herself ready for the Paris residency.

In an August cover story for Harper’s BAZAAR, the singer revealed that her preparation has included new medication, physical and vocal therapy and immunotherapy.

She’s also been staying active with Pilates three times a week and ballet classes as she works toward being able to handle the demands of performing again.

For Dion, however, the comeback isn’t only about getting back onstage. It’s also about reconnecting with the people who have supported her throughout her career.

“It’s been so long, I would like to offer them something to show how I’ve missed them,” she told Harper’s BAZAAR.

Judging by the tears that came just seconds into her first song, the feeling appears to be very much mutual.
