Sobriety is personal, but the always candid and open Chrissy Teigen is sharing her journey with the world. After five years without alcohol, Teigen took to Instagram on Thursday to share with her fans that she has welcomed it back into her life. Back in December 2020, Teigen announced that she had been 4 weeks sober, praising a book titled “Quit Like A Woman” written by Holly Whitaker.

On Thursday, she posed with the same book, revealing that Whitaker was a guest on her podcast. She praised Whitaker, saying she changed her life and perspective on the way she views the “f***ing beast that is alcohol” before admitting, “I let it back into my life. to let a lot of you down, oh I feel it deeply.”

Teigen said she was proud every time a fan shared their influence on their relationship with alcohol before admitting, “The truth is, I don’t know what I’m doing. I one hundred percent know I like me better sober. I one hundred percent know I get more done, I absolutely feel better in my body without it.”

The cookbook author was also incredibly honest when it came to the drinking habits (and consequences) that have come with her relapse, like not being able to drink in moderation and violent hangovers. “I am one hundred percent pissed that I can’t be normal and have a cocktail with my husband on vacay without it turning into 8 and feeling like shit. I’m tired of throwing up on a Tuesday. I don’t wanna feel like I need a shot to talk to a crowd. I hate that the thought of maybe having a drink can consume me some days,” she continued.

While Teigen is still figuring out her sobriety, she said her “relationship with the whole process of sobriety (and messing up)” has changed her for the better.

“I am deeply aware of where this can go if I let it. I guess my plan right now is to continue to be mindful of it. I can go to a concert sober and have the greatest time ever. I can avoid absinthe at the Ren Faire and be so abbbbsolutely full of joy,” she continued. “Photos of my kid’s birthday parties are no longer me with bleary, sleepy drinking eyes. And I am proud of that. But I still know my relationship with alcohol just isn’t normal and never will be,” Teigen added.

She went on to thank her 41.5 million followers for allowing her to figure it out openly, sending love to the sober community.

Teigen had the support and understanding of many in the comments, including her husband John Legend, who wrote, “Always proud of you.” Demi Lovato, who has also had a complicated journey with sobriety, praised her, writing, “Your honesty and vulnerability is so commendable.” “I learned it’s about progress, not perfection! You are doing amazing, and I’m so very proud of you,” the soon-to-be bride continued.

The model has been very open about her relationship with alcohol. She told Cosmopolitan in 2017, “I was, point blank, just drinking too much. I got used to being in hair and makeup and having a glass of wine. Then that glass of wine would carry over into me having one before the awards show. And then a bunch at the awards show.”

She also talked about the impact it has on the people around her.  “And then I felt bad for making kind of an ass of myself to people that I really respected. And that feeling, there‘s just nothing like that. You feel horrible. It’s not a good look for me, for John, for anybody,” she continued.

When the mother of 4 announced she was sober in December 2020 she explained some of the reasons, saying she “was done with making an ass” of herself. “One month ago, on my birthday, I got this book from my doctor and friend I was done with making an ass of myself in front of people (I’m still embarrassed), tired of day drinking and feeling like shit by 6, not being able to sleep. I have been sober since, and even if you can’t see yourself doing it or just plain don’t want to, it’s still an incredible read.”
