Before her MS diagnosis and the heartbreaking headlines about her health, Christina Applegate was a teenage sitcom star with big hair, ditching Brad Pitt at the MTV Video Music Awards.
In her new memoir, You with the Sad Eyes, the 54-year-old pulls back the curtain on her “Married … With Children” era, along with some incredible stories about her dating life and Pitt’s ability to hold a grudge.
Confirming long-whispered Hollywood lore, Applegate shared that in 1989, when she presented at the VMAs, she invited Pitt, then 26 and still climbing the Hollywood ladder, as her date. As she puts it: “I hate to put it like this, but Brad back then was still making his way as an actor, and he wasn’t yet THE Brad Pitt, the man of so many people’s dreams.”
Instead, she spent the night fixated on Sebastian Bach, the long-haired Skid Row frontman. “I had spent all night staring at Bach,” she writes. And then she left with him.
Pitt ended up driving her mom home and was “subsequently very mad” after a tense gas station stop that almost turned into him getting jumped by gangsters.
Applegate later learned Bach had a longtime partner and a baby. The fairytale fizzled fast.
Pitt, she says, “didn’t talk to her for many years.” She even reveals that two of his future movie star girlfriends later asked if she was “the girl who left him behind at the MTV Video Music Awards.” Apparently, he was still mad.
“Eventually, we agreed that I’d been a kid,” she writes. “Though he deserved much better, it was time to forgive the child who dumped him for the lead singer of Skid Row.”
She jokes now: “Of course, Brad is now THE Brad Pitt, and Sebastian Bach … well, he still has long hair, I guess.”
The incident may have lit a match under him, because just two years later, Pitt would achieve mainstream stardom in 1991 for his role as the charming hitchhiker J.D. in Thelma & Louise.
Her Pitt story was just one of many she shared in the book. Off-screen, her dating life was chaotic. She briefly dated Anthony Kiedis at 17 – a farmers market date where he announced he didn’t wear deodorant (“A horse will know me before they will know you,” he told her). After dumping her, he asked her to do his laundry. She did.
Her diaries, she writes, are full of “a–holes” and “f–kups” she thought she could fix. One unnamed boyfriend subjected her to years of physical and emotional abuse, controlling what she wore and ate. She became pregnant in 1991 and had an abortion. After he threw a lighter at her and forced tequila down her throat, she finally kicked him out.
She went on to marry Johnathon Schaech from 2001 to 2007, then found love with Dutch musician Martyn LeNoble.
The couple has been married since February 2013, and they have one daughter together, Sadie Grace LeNoble, born in January 2011.
