In 2004 Christina Applegate starred alongside Will Ferrell in the now classic comedy Anchorman – but the actress has revealed that she was given an “offensive” salary offer than even Will was shocked by.
“When they came in with the initial offer, it was, you know, a little offensive,” Christina told The View audiences on March 5, 2026. ‘And I said, ‘I can’t. I know my worth, and I can’t do that.'”
Christina then revealed that Will and director Adam McKay, who collaborated with Will on the script, decided to give up part of their own salaries to make up the difference. “They wanted me bad enough, and they said, ‘Well, we’re gonna chip in,’ ” she shared, adding: “Thank God they did because it was one of the best experiences of my entire life.”
“I had never done improv before, and learning from that group of dudes… that is the masterclass people pay for!” she added, sharing that it had become “invaluable” to her career.
The actress played Veronica Corningstone, the female lead of the movies Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, and the sequel Anchorman 2. Veronica was the love interest of Ron Burgundy, portrayed by Will.
Anchorman was produced on a budget of approximately $26 million, and went on to gross over $90.6 million worldwide.
Christina, 54, has released her new memoir, You With The Sad Eyes, and has been making the rounds to promote the book.
The American actress gained recognition in the late 1980s for playing Kelly Bundy in the Fox sitcom Married… with Children, and she also won an Emmys Award for her work on Friends, and was Golden Globe-nominated for the sitcom Jesse, and the tragicomedy series Dead to Me.
In the memoir, Christina opened up about her break-up with Brad Pitt, which saw him not talk to her “for many years”.
The mother-of-one detailed how she had invited Brad to be her plus-one at the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards, where she was presenting an award.
However, it was there that she met Sebastian Bach, the lead singer of Skid Row, who caught her attention instead.
“I had spent all night staring at Bach, who was then a long-haired hunk fronting the band Skid Row. I hate to put it like this, but Brad back then was still making his way as an actor, and he wasn’t yet THE Brad Pitt, the man of so many people’s dreams,” she wrote.
“And it gets worse: Brad was left to sullenly drive my mom … home. Apparently, at a gas station on the way, Brad almost got into a fight with a bunch of gang members, and, not surprisingly, was subsequently very mad at me.”
She added that he “didn’t talk” to her “for many years,” and to make matters worse, things didn’t last with Sebastian, causing her to regret calling things off with Brad.
“Much later … two of [Brad’s] movie star girlfriends asked me if it was true that I was the girl who left Brad behind at the MTV Video Music Awards,” she added. “Brad had apparently told both of them separately that he was still mad at me.”
