Cillian Murphy is a stalwart of the acting world, having established himself as a safe pair of hands thanks to standout performances in Oppenheimer, Peaky Blinders, 28 Years Later and Steve.
It’s perhaps unsurprising, then, that one of his sons has followed in his footsteps. Cillian shares two sons with his wife, Yvonne McGuinness, including 18-year-old Aran, who has already appeared in TV projects such as Lola and Klara and the Sun.
Speaking to press, including HELLO!, at the Oscar Wilde Awards in 2024, Cillian said of his son: “I’m very, very proud of him, he’s a great, great actor.”
While the 49-year-old tends to keep his private life out of the spotlight, he has opened up about the non-negotiable advice he has stuck to throughout his career – and what he now passes on to Aran as he navigates the industry.
Cillian’s industry advice
In an interview with E! News ahead of Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, Cillian shared the words of wisdom that have stayed with him: “I say this all the time. I did a play when I was very young, and I think I was rushing out to get to the pub and I just dropped my costume on the ground and this older actor said, ‘Always, always hang up your costume.’
“And what he meant by that was not just hang it up, but like you’re just the fella prancing around on stage there. There’s a whole machine here, like technicians and stage management and front of house, and you’re just the act. You’re just one cog in this whole wheel. I’ve never forgotten that.”
In the same interview, Cillian’s co-star Tim Roth shared the advice he would give his own son, Jack Roth: “No means there’s a yes coming,” said the Pulp Fiction actor.
“So, if someone says no, it means that somewhere out there is something that’s coming towards you. Just keep going. Don’t worry about it, it’ll find you and knock you over. But when they say no, it means you’re available for the one that’s coming.”
Who are Cillian Murphy’s two sons?
Cillian and Yvonne are parents to two sons: Malachy, born in 2005, and Aran, born in 2007.
Despite his global fame, Cillian has largely kept his family life private. However, in a 2016 interview with The Guardian, he offered a rare insight into his sons’ personalities: “They seem better adjusted than I was,” he said.
“More sure of themselves. I’m happy about that. For me, it was something that took a long time to figure out: that it’s all right to be you, that it’s all right to be an individual.”
Like many actors, Cillian has also spoken about the challenges of balancing work and family life. “That work-life balance thing is hard,” he told GQ.
“I have an amazing wife and I couldn’t do this without her and her understanding. But it is a struggle. I think it is for any dad whose work takes him away, which it generally does, and which consumes him, which my work does.”
