, one of the top players in tennis, made her deepest run yet at the 2025 Madrid Open, a WTA 1000 event on clay at the Caja Mágica. After a first-round bye, she fought back from a 6-0 first-set loss to beat Dayana Yastremska 0-6, 6-2, 7-5, then took down fellow American Ann Li 6-2, 6-3 to reach the fourth round. Gauff stayed strong with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Belinda Bencic in the Round of 16.

She was able to finish her match without issue — but technical problems hit during her on-court interview, when a sudden power outage left her visibly shaken and briefly threw the tournament into chaos.

Gauff stays composed as power outage disrupts Madrid Open

A massive power outage swept across Spain, Portugal, and parts of France, throwing public transport, traffic, and flights into chaos. The disruption also hit the Madrid Open, where matches and player interviews were briefly thrown into disarray. During an early morning post-match interview, Coco Gauff’s microphone suddenly cut out. The 21-year-old froze, visibly startled, stepping back and instinctively covering her mouth as the live TV feed went silent. Moments later, she recovered, smiling as she continued chatting with the reporter off-camera while the broadcast scrambled to get back on track.
