Coco Gauff nailed a key victory at the Miami Open. Over the past weeks, Gauff has been climbing the ranks at the Miami Open, with her scheduled to play tomorrow in the semifinals against Karolina Muchova. Following her win against Belinda Bencic, Gauff gave credit to an unlikely source for her win: a tweet.
Shortly after the win, Gauff discussed her performance with an on-court reporter. “I honestly, I saw a tweet that said I should go to the net more and I was like, ‘Yeah, you’re right, I win a lot of net points,’” she said.
“So I honestly was thinking about that on match point, and I was just hoping I didn’t miss the ball in the net because I’ve done that a couple times, but I was just focused on just hitting it over the net.”
The original tweet was shared in February and reads: “Coco I need you to go to the net like you did tonight WAY more often. We didn’t get the win in the end but my gosh was it amazing seeing you rush that net and put those balls away.”
Following Gauff’s win, the person behind the account hilariously took some credit. “She’s talking about me yall, I’m cocos new coach,” they wrote in a tweet posted on Monday.

Over the past year, Gauff has experienced some ups and downs in tournament performances and opened up about dealing with her impostor syndrome. “I think I have to believe that I belong where I am. Sometimes I can get imposter syndrome,” she said in a press conference earlier this week.
“Even when they’re saying my accomplishments when I walk, or during the warm-up, it doesn’t feel like me. And I’m like, ‘Oh, actually, I do have a good career.’”

Gauff’s performance in the Miami Open makes her the youngest American to reach the women’s singles semi-finals since Serena Williams in 2004. If she were to reach the final of the tournament, she would take over Iga Swiatek as the world’s number 1 female player according to WTA rankings.
