Cruz Beckham has shared his true feelings about accusations of a “level of privilege” he is enjoying in his music career thanks to his famous parents. David and Victoria’s youngest son, who has been garnering plenty of attention with his band The Breakers, has said he “completely understands” frustrations at what appears to be his jump-start in the industry.
Speaking to Rolling Stone, Cruz – who is coming to the end of his debut tour, which will culminate this week with three sold-out nights at London’s Courtyard Theatre – was asked for his response to suggestions his family connections have helped him get ahead. “I completely understand it,” he said.
“On one hand, I can’t control what family I come from but on the other hand I am so aware that I’m incredibly fortunate, which is why it means even more to me to do this the right way and try to be as proud of myself as I can. I really want to do this the right way – I want to play live in these independent venues across the country.”
The 21-year-old, whose mum Victoria was a member of the Spice Girls and enjoyed her own solo singing career before becoming a fashion designer, continued: “I want to earn my stripes, I want to work really hard, I want to learn to be the best musician I can be, I want to meet my fans, and ultimately see where this mad journey takes me.”
Cruz was also questioned about why he decided to use his ‘Beckham’ surname instead of a stage name. “I realised quite quickly when I was in studios that nothing resonates more than honesty in music,” he explained. “Honesty, truth, and speaking from your own experience. So anything else would’ve felt inauthentic. I didn’t spend that much time writing songs to better understand who I was, to then be someone else.”
His indie-rock band have released a steady stream of tracks, including ‘For Your Love’, ‘Optics’ and ‘Lick The Toad’, since October. On Spotify, they have drawn more than 150,000 monthly listeners.
The musician – who performed with mum Victoria and three of her bandmates Geri Horner, Mel C and Emma Bunton, in a viral post on Instagram recently – has had several family members attend his gigs. They included dad David, who supported his Manchester show, during which he wore his dad’s football shirt.

He will perform at venues in Washington DC, New York, Toronto, Seattle and Los Angeles, alongside festival appearances at Lollapalooza, Outside Lands and Shaky Knees.
The rising star’s journey stateside will see him travel close to estranged LA-based older brother Brooklyn, 27, and his wife Nicola Peltz, 31. Cruz, who broke down while performing ‘Loneliest Boy’ on stage in the capital this week – a song believed to be about his sibling – has said he is “hopeful” of a reconciliation after the family feud went public in January.
