CSI: Miami actor David Caruso looked worlds away from his police lieutenant character during a recent outing in Los Angeles, with the star sporting a black sweatshirt over a gray tee paired with dark trousers and brown Crocs. He added a black cross-body bag with a red-and-white-striped handle, as well as a tan-colored hat and black sunglasses to complete the look.
The 70-year-old, who was spotted taking his pet to the vet, retired from the spotlight altogether in 2012 after CSI: Miami was unexpectedly canceled. David opted to close the chapter on his acting career and instead pursued his passion for art by opening an art gallery.
After his retirement in 2012, David did not make a public appearance until he was seen in 2017 with his younger kids, Marquez and Paloma, in 2023. He portrayed Horatio Caine in the hit CSI spinoff from 2002 to 2012, and shared his love for the show with CNN.
“The assemblage of people, and being a part of the CSI family, was so effortless for all of us,” he explained. “It would be great if we could do the show for a while. I’d be very comfortable doing this.”
David’s co-star, Eva LaRue, reflected on the show’s sudden cancelation in 2012, and the disappointment of the fans. “I was sad because we did not get a chance to say goodbye to the fans or to each other,” she told Digital Spy.
“I think we all feel like the character development would have been important to us actors, but the nature of the show did not allow for it. There was not enough time because of the elaborate procedural scenes,” LaRue added.
David learned to be cautious in his career after he quit the role of Detective John Kelly in NYPD Blue just four episodes into the second season in 1994 to pursue other projects. He had gotten his start on Getting Wasted in the ’80s before clinching a spot in NYPD Blue in 1993, in a role that won him a Golden Globe in 1994.
Almost a decade on from his departure from the show, David admitted that it wasn’t his best move. “In television, you are suddenly shot out of a cannon and into all that, and if you are not prepared and you don’t have some kind of structure around you, you’re not going to survive,” he told The Sydney Morning Herald.
“It has taken me a long time to re-lay the foundation of trust. When you make a mistake careerwise, in the way that I did, there is a feeling of violation – a sense of, ‘We supported you; you abandoned us’ – and there is truth to that,” he continued.
“But I have a sense [the focus] is shifting off my damaged celebrity and back onto my work.” David’s life off the screen was equally as dramatic as his work in front of the camera.
The redheaded star was first married to actress Cheri Maugans from 1979 to 1984, followed by actress Rachel Ticotin from 1984 to 1987, with the pair splitting after welcoming their daughter, Greta. David then tied the knot with producer Margaret Buckley in 1996, yet split in 2004, before going on to date Liza Marquez and welcome kids Marquez and Paloma with her.
