Dick Van Dyke has been spotted in a wheelchair during a rare outing, offering a poignant glimpse into life at 100th after he celebrated his birthday in December.
The Mary Poppins star appeared noticeably frailer as he was pushed by a companion, dressed casually in a white shirt, grey trousers and black slip-on shoes. With his hands gently folded in his lap, the actor looked deep in thought as he was guided through a sunny California setting.
The sight marks a stark contrast to the energetic performer audiences have adored for decades, known for his dancing, comedic timing and seemingly boundless vitality.
The outing comes as Dick shared a deeply personal reflection in a recent health diary for The Times, where he admitted he now feels “diminished” both “physically and socially”.
Opening up about the emotional toll of ageing, he revealed the profound loneliness that has come with outliving many of those closest to him. “Every single one of my dearest lifelong friends is gone, which feels just as lonely as it sounds,” he wrote.
Despite this, the actor made it clear he remains committed to preserving both his joy and his health. At the heart of his resilience is his relationship with his wife, Arlene, 54, whom he credits with keeping his spirit alive.
“Without question, our ongoing romance is the most important reason I have not withered away into a hermetic grouch,” he penned.
Reflecting on their age difference with characteristic humour, he added: “Arlene is half my age, and she makes me feel somewhere between two thirds and three quarters my age, which is still saying a lot.”
However, Dick acknowledged that his physical limitations are becoming increasingly apparent. He revealed that he can no longer travel long distances and has had to turn down invitations and work opportunities that would take him away from his California home.
“That kind of travel takes so much out of me that I have to say no,” he shared. His increasingly homebound lifestyle marks a significant shift for a star who once embodied movement and joy on screen.
The actor also spoke candidly about the wider world, revealing that recent events have left him feeling unsettled. “I just lived through two Southern California wildfires in less than a month, right out my front door, including the worst one in history,” he wrote.
“Daily, I spiral into anguish over the mayhem and cruelty being inflicted on the entire world by those in power. So yes, I suppose at certain times of day I am the grumpy old man who yells at the TV.”
Yet even in these quieter, more reflective years, Dick’s enduring optimism remains unmistakable. “For the vast majority of my years, I have been in what I can only describe as a full-on bear hug with the experience of living,” he shared. “Being alive has been doing life not like a job but rather like a giant playground.”
Dick met makeup artist Arene Silver, at a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) awards dinner back in 2006. Despite remaining friends for years, the pair pursued a romantic relationship after Arlene helped Dick mourn his deceased partner, Michelle Triola. The couple married in February 2012 and have remained together ever since.
Earlier this month, Steve Boettcher, the director of the upcoming film Dick Van Dyke: 100th Celebration, revealed what the secret to Dick’s longevity really is: his wife. “Honestly, I think she’s been a key force in keeping him so vibrant and alive today. I really feel that that love affair is amazing. I think they just want to play,” he told People.
