Dolly Parton will soon be laid to rest next to her husband of nearly six decades, Carl Dean. As the world mourns her passing, there has been a lot of curiosity about their relationship. Dean was rarely seen in public with the singer, and she enjoyed her fame alone, with him rooting her on behind the scenes as her biggest fan.
Dean passed away on March 3, 2025, and their anniversary was just two months later on May 30. It was already an emotional milestone, and now, following her death, the memories they shared carry a different weight.
When Dean died, Parton made it clear just how difficult it was to imagine life without him. “Carl and I spent many wonderful years together,” she said in a statement shared after his death. “Words can’t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years.”
She asked for privacy as she and her family grieved, but over the following months, Parton slowly began opening up about what it was like to lose her husband.

When she returned, the church had since placed a large plaque in its yard commemorating the couple and their wedding. “It talks about us getting married there,” she explained.
© The Grosby GroupFor Parton, there was something important about returning to the place where their marriage began. “That’s where I spent my anniversary, our first—my first—our anniversary without him, the first one,” she said. “I thought, well, I have got to go back and just take a picture on … the same steps at that same church.”
The “9-5” singer found a way to bring a piece of Dean with her that day, wearing his wedding ring around her neck. “I put his wedding ring around my little gold chain and wore it,” she said. “And I wore my little original wedding rings and just stood there.”
Parton said returning to the church helped her. “It was just so sweet,” she said. “It was good for me.”
Their private relationship
For decades, the couple’s relationship had been one of the rare celebrity marriages that existed largely away from the public eye.
Parton became a global superstar, while Dean deliberately stayed out of the spotlight, running his asphalt paving business and allowing his wife to have the enormous career she had built.

She was 16 and had just moved to the city when they crossed paths outside a laundromat. “I was surprised and delighted that while he talked to me, he looked at my face (a rare thing for me),” Parton wrote on her website. “He seemed to be genuinely interested in finding out who I was and what I was about.”
Dean remembered that first meeting just as vividly. “My first thought was I’m gonna marry that girl,” he said when they renewed their vows for their 50th wedding anniversary in 2016. “My second thought was, ‘Lord, she’s good-looking.’ And that was the day my life began.”
Parton was more cautious at first. “I wouldn’t go out with him,” she once told The New York Times. “I mean, that was somethin’ we was taught. You gotta know somebody, or they may take you on a back road and kill you.”
She eventually invited him over while she was babysitting her nephew. Dean came by every day that week, and when they finally went out together, he took her to meet his parents.
Two years after meeting, they secretly got married with Parton’s mother, the pastor, and his wife in attendance. “I said, ‘I’ve got to have momma there,’” she recalled. She had bought a little dress, while her mother bought her a Bible with flowers on it. “We grabbed momma and went back, and got married on a Monday, in a church.”
Their honeymoon lasted only “a few hours” before they had to return to work. Dean was also never completely absent from Parton’s creative life, even if he rarely appeared beside her publicly.

And despite decades of speculation about why Dean stayed so far away from the spotlight, Parton always defended the arrangement. “He’s always been my biggest fan behind the scenes,” she said.
She also understood that Dean valued his privacy more than almost anything else. During an appearance on Bunnie Xo’s Dumb Blonde podcast, Parton explained that he didn’t want her sharing too much about him publicly. “He don’t want me to tell the world nothing about Carl,” she said.
She continued, “I can talk what I want to, but he’ll say, ‘Just leave me out the whole damn thing.’” After Dean’s death, Parton admitted that she was doing better than she expected, but that didn’t mean she wasn’t devastated.
“He suffered a great deal,” she said in an interview with Knox News. “I’m at peace that he’s at peace,” she added. “But that doesn’t keep me from missing him and loving him.”
Parton described the loss as something she would have to carry with her. “It’s a hole in my heart, you know,” she said. “But we’ll fill that up with good stuff, and he’ll still always be with me.”
When she made her first public appearance after Dean’s death at Dollywood’s 40th-season celebration, Parton didn’t try to hide the fact that she was still grieving. “I need to laugh,” she said. “I need some fun, so I’m probably gonna be stupid. I’ve been crying the last week or two enough.”
