Dolly Parton is focusing on her health and well-being as she enters a milestone year. The legendary entertainer sparked concern in September 2025 after postponing her Las Vegas residency due to what she described as “health challenges,” prompting fans to closely follow updates about her condition. Worry briefly intensified the following month when her sister, Freida Parton, asked for prayers, but Dolly quickly eased speculation with her trademark humor and reassurance. More recent updates indicate she’s recovering at home, spending time with loved ones, decorating for the holidays, and celebrating her 80th birthday on January 19, 2026, telling fans she’s “just getting started.” In honor of her birthday, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee proclaimed January 19 as “Dolly Parton Day,” while tributes poured in nationwide celebrating her enduring legacy.

With new book releases, a Broadway-bound musical, and a renewed sense of purpose ahead of her, Dolly continues to show she’s far from slowing down. Below, we break down everything she’s shared about her health, recovery, and what’s next in this new chapter.

What’s Wrong With Dolly Parton?

Dolly announced in a September 28, 2025, Instagram post, that she was postponing her Las Vegas concerts due to “health challenges.”

“I want the fans and public to hear directly from me that, unfortunately, I will need to postpone my upcoming Las Vegas concerts,” Dolly wrote. “As many of you know, I have been dealing with some health challenges, and my doctors tell me that I must have a few procedures.”

Without specifying her current condition, Dolly added her signature wit to her statement by adding, “As I joked with them, it must be time for my 100,000-mile check-up, although it’s not the usual trip to see my plastic surgeon!”

Is Dolly Parton Sick? What We Know So Far

While fans have been concerned about Dolly’s health in recent months, the country legend has assured everyone she’s on the mend and “getting better every day.” Previously, her sister Freida indicated that she was “under the weather” in an October 2025 Facebook post. She did not specify at the time if Dolly was sick with an illness.

In her initial Facebook post, Freida wrote she was praying for Dolly. She wrote, “Last night, I was up all night praying for my sister, Dolly. Many of you know she hasn’t been feeling her best lately. I truly believe in the power of prayer, and I have been lead to ask all of the world that loves her to be prayer warriors and pray with me. She’s strong, she’s loved, and with all the prayers being lifted for her, I know in my heart she’s going to be just fine. Godspeed, my sissy Dolly. We all love you!”

Freida’s post stirred nationwide concern, and she promptly clarified in a second Facebook post that she “didn’t mean to scare anyone” or “make [Dolly’s condition] sound so serious.”

“She’s been a little under the weather, and I simply asked for prayers because I believe so strongly in the power of prayer,” Freida insisted. “It was nothing more than a little sister asking for prayers for her big sister.”

Later that day, Dolly shared a video to X — captioned, “I ain’t dead yet!” — to prove that she’s doing OK. “Do I look sick to you?!” she asked the camera.

“I’m working hard here,” the country queen insisted with a smile while sitting in front of a green screen, wearing a stylish red and black top and her signature makeup. Dolly thanked fans for their prayers and concern and acknowledged the rumors. “But I want you to know that I’m OK. I’ve got some problems, as I mentioned.”

Dolly pointed out that she didn’t take care of herself after her late husband, Carl Dean, died and noticed an AI image of Reba McEntire at her fake deathbed.

“I’m not ready to die yet,” she concluded. “I don’t think God is through with me, and I ain’t done working.

Dolly Parton’s Health Issues Explained

Dolly has not revealed any major health setbacks in the past. In her 2025 announcement, the Queen of Country pointed out that she can still “work on all of [her] projects” at home in Nashville but is currently unable to “rehearse and put the show together.”

“In all seriousness, given this, I am not going to be able to rehearse and put together the show that I want you to see, and the show that you deserve to see,” Dolly explained via Instagram. “You pay good money to see me perform, and I want to be at my best for you. While I’ll still be able to work on all of my projects from here in Nashville, I just need a little time to get show ready, as they say.”

In a March 2026 keynote address at her theme park, Dolly acknowledged that she has “been not touring, as you know. I’ve had a few little health issues, and we’re taking good care of them,” without specifying what “issues” she has again.

“I just kind of got worn down and worn out, grieving over Carl and a lot of other little things going on,” she continued. “I just got myself kind of where I needed to build myself back up spiritually, emotionally and physically. But all is good. It didn’t slow me down.”

How Is Dolly Parton Doing Now?

As previously noted, Dolly has insisted that she’s doing OK, but she had to skip an appearance at the November 2025 International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions Hall of Fame induction ceremony due to her ongoing health issues.

“I sure wish I could be with you in person today, but you probably heard that I’ve been dealing with a few health challenges this fall, and my doctors told me to take it easy for just a little while, and I’m truly sorry I can’t be there,” she said in an Instagram video. “I sure wanted to take the chance to say thank you for this incredible honor.”

In January 2026, though, ahead of her 80th birthday, Dolly skipped on attending her party, prompting newfound concern among fans.

Is Dolly Parton Quitting Music?

No, Dolly is not retiring from the music industry. She squashed any potential rumors from circulating by adding in her Instagram note, “Don’t worry about me quittin’ the business because God hasn’t said anything about stopping yet. But, I believe He is telling me to slow down right now so I can be ready for more big adventures with all of you. I love you, and thank you for understanding.”
