Ellen DeGeneres and her wife Portia de Rossi haven’t had an easy ride since relocating from America to the UK with their house, Kitesbridge Farm, flooding, then struggling to sell it – now its fate hangs in the balance as an important day looms.
The presenter and partner found their dream home in the Cotswolds, only to discover it was on a major flood plain when extensive rain hit and their property was impacted. After that, they decided to acquire a different mansion, also in the Cotswolds and listed their original property for sale. After months of it remaining unsold, it was dramatically pulled from the market. Speculation swirled, presuming they had finally found a buyer and then came a decision that shocked everyone.
Ellen submitted plans to the local council to renovate parts of the property and outlined her wishes to make in their permanent home, and HELLO! has found out that the consultation will take place in just over a week, on 13 April, as noted on the council website. This is where the council will meet to decide if the proposed changes are acceptable and will be granted.
What is Ellen DeGeneres changing about her property?
The proposal is entitled: “Demolition of existing agricultural building and erection of stables.” The covering letter for the application reads: “There is no need for the new owners for their own agricultural building for storage. They are however horse owners and do require stabling for their horses. The general position of the existing surplus building has been identified as the optimal location for stabling and provides the opportunity to replace the modern farm building with a more vernacular structure that is more in keeping with the character of the remaining buildings on the land. The proposed building provide space for 2 loose boxes.”
The proposal concludes with the point that the changes would not affect anyone in the neighbourhood directly. “There are no nearby neighbours and thus no impact on residential amenity that would result from the provision of stabling,” it read.
Ellen DeGeneres’ comments on leaving the US behind
In a chat with Richard Bacon in 2025, Ellen confirmed that Donald Trump’s reelection as president of the United States was behind the couple’s decision to lay down roots in the UK. She also spoke very highly of her new home. “Everything here is just better – the way animals are treated, people are polite. I just love it here.”
Now dubbed “the British Beverly Hills,” the Cotswolds is very popular with A-listers. Victoria and David Beckham own a spectacular residence in Great Tew and Jamie Norton lives in Stroud.
Ellen’s real estate moves
Ellen is no stranger to a real estate purchase, often buying homes to flip them, making millions in profit as she goes. Despite leaving Montecito behind, Realtor has reported that Ellen has recently closed a deal on a new mansion in the area for $27.4 million.
