Emma Heming is opening up about the first time she met Bruce Willis. The couple, who have been married for almost 20 years, met at a gym and had an instant connection. In an appearance on the “Making Space” podcast, Heming revealed that she was engaged to a different man.
“I met him in like 2005, I want to say, and we met at the gym, like most people in Hollywood do, I guess,” she said. “His time was before mine and we would sort of overlap, and the things I remember about him was just how warm and charismatic, how funny he was, but he always really took the time to want to learn more about me,” she added. “Just more about who I was, about my life, and prior to that I had never really thought about Bruce Willis.”
Heming revealed that while she knew of Willis’ famous TV show “Moonlighting,” she didn’t know much of his other roles because she was never a fan of action movies.
“So when I had noticed him, I had said to my mother ‘I met Bruce Willis, and he’s really a lovely man.’ And my mom was like, ‘What are you doing? You’re engaged to be married.’ I said, ‘No, no, no’—yes, at the time, I was engaged to be married, but I had met him and I just noticed that,” added Heming.
© Pacific Press/LightRocket via GeWhile Heming and Willis knew each other for some time, it wasn’t until “years later,” after Heming’s then relationship “fizzled” out, that the two finally went on a date. She looks back fondly at the time and their dynamic “I just really loved being around him,” she said.
“There was just something very warm, safe and fun. My husband is just so full of life, and it was a really beautiful time. It was a really great time in our lives.”

© Stefanie KeenanHeming and Willis met in 2007 and got married two years later. They welcomed two daughters throughout their marriage: Mabel, born in 2012, and Evelyn, born in 2014. Heming and her daughters became involved in Willis’ larger family dynamic, with them spending time with his ex Demi Moore and daughters Rumer, Scout and Tallulah, whom Willis and Moore had welcomed years before.
Following Willis’ diagnosis with FTD in 2022, Heming has turned to their family for support. “I really turn to my stepdaughters and Demi,” she said in an interview with The Times. “And they really are helping me navigate this.”
