Emma Roberts steps out without husband weeks after star-studded family wedding

Emma Roberts looked effortlessly chic as she stepped out at the US Open on Saturday, just over a month after her intimate wedding to actor Cody John.

The 35-year-old actress, who is the niece of Hollywood superstar Julia Roberts, turned heads in a delicate slip dress as she attended the tennis tournament in New York.

Emma’s midi-length dress featured a pretty white lace bodice dotted with black embellishments before falling into a silky cream skirt decorated with painterly stripes in blue, coral and black.

She leaned into the preppy courtside aesthetic by adding oversized tortoiseshell glasses and pointed two-tone heels, carrying a structured powder-blue handbag.

Her blonde hair was swept into a relaxed low bun with loose face-framing strands, while her makeup was kept fresh and understated.

The appearance marks one of Emma’s first major public outings since she became a married woman on July 25, tying the knot with Cody at his family’s home in Sun Valley, Idaho.

Emma and Cody’s wedding was a deeply personal affair, with the actress revealing that they wanted the entire weekend to feel more like a vacation with their loved ones than a formal Hollywood event.

“Cody and I were really aligned on everything,” she told Vogue of planning their big day.

The couple’s guest list included Emma’s famous aunt Julia and her husband Danny Moder, as well as Demi Moore, Sarah Paulson, Billie Lourd, Kristen Stewart and her wife Dylan Meyer.

But perhaps the most important person in the wedding party was Emma’s five-year-old son Rhodes, whom she shares with former partner Garrett Hedlund.

In an incredibly sweet moment, Rhodes walked his mom down the flower-lined aisle before she exchanged vows with Cody.

Emma wore a custom Monique Lhuillier silk chiffon gown in a specially created “Vintage Rose” shade, featuring delicate lace, sculpted corsetry and a romantic draped silhouette.

Rather than opting for traditional bright white, Emma wanted her gown to look as though it had been discovered in another era.

“I wanted it to feel very vintage-inspired,” she explained, revealing that her love of antique books, treasure hunting and collecting old ephemera inspired the design.

Her brief for the final effect was characteristically unconventional: she wanted to resemble “a little antique ghost doll.”

For the after-party, Emma changed into something completely different, choosing a black two-piece Monique Lhuillier design from the designer’s Fall 2004 archive, featuring a Chantilly lace corset and layered silk organza skirt.

How Emma met her husband Cody John

The newlyweds’ love story began with a blind date in May 2022, after they were introduced by mutual friend Jeff Ward. Emma admitted the set-up was a new experience for her and that nerves initially got the better of her. Cody had made several dinner reservations around Los Angeles for a Friday night, but Emma suggested they meet for early drinks the following Tuesday instead.

Those drinks ended up lasting eight hours. The pair went on to dinner before Cody drove Emma home while they listened to Luke Bryan’s Play It Again, which subsequently became one of their favorite songs. “We have been together ever since,” Emma told Vogue.

They made their romance Instagram official in August 2022 and became engaged two years later. Emma announced the engagement herself with a cheeky nod to her mother Kelly Cunningham, writing: “Putting this here before my mom tells everyone.”

Why Emma keeps her relationships private

Although Emma has now shared intimate details about falling for Cody and planning their wedding, she has deliberately kept much of their four-year relationship away from the spotlight.

It is a decision shaped partly by the intense public attention surrounding her previous relationships.

Before Cody, Emma dated Garrett Hedlund, with whom she welcomed Rhodes in December 2020. They separated in early 2022.

She was also previously engaged to her American Horror Story co-star Evan Peters during their on-off relationship between 2012 and 2019.

Emma has explained in the past why she became reluctant to publicly discuss her romantic life.

“I never want to talk about relationships I’m in or that are ending or have ended,” she previously said, adding that navigating a relationship privately is difficult enough without an audience.

Her relationship with Cody has consequently unfolded much more quietly, although their wedding offered a rare glimpse inside the life they have built together.

Julia Roberts celebrates her niece’s big day

Emma’s close bond with her aunt Julia was also reflected in the wedding celebrations.

The Pretty Woman star, 58, traveled to Idaho with husband Danny Moder for the nuptials and was among the small group of family and friends who watched Emma and Cody say “I do.”

Emma’s father Eric Roberts, however, did not attend. Addressing his absence following the ceremony, the 70-year-old actor said: “I love my daughter, always have, always will.”

“It is perfectly wonderful for her to celebrate however she wants, with whomever she wants.”
