Eric Dane passed away at 53 on February 19 from his battle with ALS on February 19, 2026.
Prior to his death, he provided Netflix with a vulnerable interview called Famous Last Words, with the intention of it getting released after his death. The documentary was released on February 20.
During the moving interview, the Grey’s Anatomy actor revealed his touching final statement to his wife of 19 years, Rebecca Gayheart.
The interviewer inquired: “So with Rebecca, who you met and fell in love with quickly – how would you describe the essence of that relationship and that love affair?”
Eric revealed: “Well, we still love each other deeply. I just think we don’t wanna live with each other. But there’s a lot of love there. I’ll never…I will have never, by the time anybody sees this, have fallen in love with another woman, as deeply as I feel in love with Rebecca. She’s the mother of my children and the whole way that thing came about it was so organic and fortuitous.”
He recalled the moment he knew that she was the one and added: “I met Rebecca and I turned to her friend and I said: ‘I’m gonna marry that girl.'” The interviewer responded: “How did you know?”
Eric expressed: “I have no idea. I have no idea how serious I was in that moment, but I said that ,and her friend said: ‘No way. She’s never breaking up with her fiancé. They’re getting married. They’ve been together since they were 15.’ You know, four years later, I married her. I knew that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her. It was supposed to happen.”
The trailer for the documentary stated: “Before he died, Eric Dane sat down for a deeply meaningful conversation, at the end of which he was given the opportunity to speak directly to the world and deliver his final message, knowing that what you’re about to see would not air until after he passed away.”
It continued: “Even if that meant locking away that footage for months, or even years. These are Eric Dane’s Famous Last Words.”
His fans were moved by his transparency and flocked to the comments. One person wrote: “Even in this hardest of times, with the ravages of this insidious disease, Eric still had a joy and a sparkle. Thinking of his family at this time. May his memory always be a blessing.”
A second fan wrote: “Crying my eyes out now,” while someone else added: “I’ve been sobbing since the news of him dying. So now, more sobbing. RIP Eric Dane and my deepest condolences to his family and friends.”
Eric left behind not only his wife but their two children Billie, 15, and Georgia, 14.
