Hollywood is still in shock and mourning the passing of Eric Dane. The actor died at the age of 53 on February 19 just under a year after revealing his ALS diagnosis.
The reaction to his tragic passing has especially resulted in an outpour of support for his wife Rebecca Gayheart, their daughters Billie and Georgia, and also his girlfriend Janell Shirtcliff (while Rebecca had filed for the legal dismissal of their divorce and supported him through his diagnosis, the pair were largely separated).
Rebecca took to her own social media page on Sunday, February 22, to share a message to Eric’s fans who’ve shared their condolences, expressed support, and contributed to his family’s GoFundMe, which was started by his friends.
Preserving memories
In the photo shared on her Instagram Stories, Rebecca showcased a small candlelight shrine prepared for her late husband, which included some family photos and a few candles to illuminate them.
“I am so blown away by the outpouring of love and support from our community,” she penned in her first official message since Eric’s passing. “There aren’t words to express our gratitude. You are truly holding us up during this difficult time.”
Eric Dane’s GoFundMe
Shortly after the actor’s passing, his friends set up a GoFundMe to support his wife and their daughters. “Following his diagnosis, Eric became a passionate spokesperson for the ALS community, using his voice and platform to advocate for fellow patients and to push for greater awareness,” the post read.
“Even as his own health declined, he remained deeply committed to helping others facing the same devastating disease. As his illness progressed far more quickly than anyone could have imagined, Eric’s friends have come together to create this GoFundMe to support his girls and their future needs.”
It continued: “Any contribution, no matter the size, will help provide stability during this incredibly difficult time and in the future for Eric’s wonderful daughters. Thank you.”
Hollywood coming together
The goal for the GoFundMe was set at $500,000. As of writing, in just a few short days, over 3600 donations have come in, totaling nearly $417,000 and counting.
The top donors come from Eric’s own circle, with Euphoria creator Sam Levinson contributing $27,000, Hailey Bieber donating $20,000, Brad Falchuk donating $10,000, and new President of Disney Dana Walden contributing $5000. One anonymous donor even gave $50,000 on February 23.
A final statement
Eric’s death was announced via a statement that was later posted to his social media page alongside a photo with his two daughters. “With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS,” it began.
“Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight,” the statement continued. “He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received.”
