When it comes to getting older, Gaby Roslin’s viewpoint on it is firm. She will be 33 years old forever.
“I never talk about my age. I’m 33 every birthday because women are always judged,” the former Big Breakfast host reveals on this week’s Second Act podcast. “I’m really lucky to be alive and I make the most of every single day.”
Gaby opens up how she overcame crippling shyness to become famous for hosting some of the biggest live TV shows – and the one surprising thing that helped her overcome it. “I gave up drinking eight years ago,” she says. “I wish I’d known all of those years ago how much less shy I’d be from not drinking. You don’t think, ‘oh, I hope I didn’t say anything awful’. I walk in, I drink fizzy water, I chat to people, And I get into my car and drive home whenever I want.”
With a multi-faceted career that has seen her faking orgasms on the Big Breakfast bed with When Harry Met Sally actor Billy Crystal (“can you imagine doing that today? Everything’s so serious?”), to starring in Chicago on the West End, and presenting her weekly Magic radio show, Gaby has no plans on retiring. While only she will know her exact age, she intends to “still be doing live television til I’m 99.”
Gaby also talks about how she coped with waves of grief of losing her mother to lung cancer when she was starting out in her career, and why she isn’t yet ready for her older daughters Libbi-Jack and Amelie to leave the family home.
“I’m very lucky that my elder daughter, is back at home because rent is extortionate and she can’t afford it, I hope she always can’t afford it,” she jokes. “I never want them to leave.”
