Gwyneth Paltrow is fully owning the “nepo baby” label and even having a little fun with it.
The Marty Supreme actress, whose parents are Blythe Danner and filmmaker Bruce Paltrow, brought it up while being honored at the New York Women in Film & Television Muse Awards on Friday, March 20.
“I was extraordinarily lucky to be given opportunities early on, probably partly because I’m one of the original nepo babies,” Gwyneth joked, “but I would be lying if I said that that made my path clear.”
She went on to explain that her career hasn’t exactly followed a simple or expected route. “There were many moments when the industry made it very plain that women are expected to stay in their lane and to be graceful and quiet and above all to be one thing. And I’ve never been very good at being one thing,” she said, referencing her move into building her lifestyle brand, Goop.
The 53-year-old actress also made sure to show love to her mom, who was in the audience. She shared how much of her approach to work and creativity came from watching Danner over the years.
“Mom, you showed me what it looks like to commit fully to a craft, to be insanely creative and brave in your choices onstage, and to carry yourself with so much grace, even when sometimes this industry doesn’t make it so easy. So thank you,” she said.
It wasn’t just her mom getting a shoutout. Paltrow also highlighted the support she’s had from her husband, Brad Falchuk, and her son, Moses Martin.
“When we talk about women supporting women, which matters enormously, we also want to acknowledge the gorgeous, thoughtful, and loving men who show up for us and fill our hearts with love,” Gwyneth said after mentioning the two.
She has also spoken in the past about the impact her late father had on her life and career. Bruce Paltrow passed away in 2002 at 58 after battling throat cancer, and she still credits him for shaping how she navigates life.
“He helped me get through life and [taught me] how to deal with a lot of stuff, and he would have helped me keep perspective all the time,” she shared during a 2023 social media Q&A.
