Gwyneth Paltrow revealed that she recently underwent a controversial and unusual wellness treatment to address the health issues she had been experiencing.

The 53-year-old shared with the Daily Mail that she received therapeutic plasma exchange treatment, which involves a professional drawing out the blood, separating the abnormal antibodies from the blood and returning it to the patient.

It is typically used to treat health conditions like blood disorders, neurological disorders and blood cancers. Therapeutic plasma exchange is still controversial in the medical field, due to the lack of high-level evidence.

Gwyneth explained that she underwent five sessions of the treatment at a Chicago clinic, with a price tag of up to $50,000, which alleviated the brain fog she had been experiencing.

“I’d been going through lots of health stuff with that kind of ambiguous chronic stuff that medicine normally has a harder time dealing with: chronic fatigue, brain fog,” she said. “I was so interested in this idea that we could filter out things in our blood that were making us more sick.”

“I felt amazing after,” she continued. “I felt this immediate unburdening and clarity and lightness.” Gwyneth is no stranger to unusual treatments, all in the name of her wellness and lifestyle brand, Goop. In the past, she has tried everything from rectal ozone therapy to coffee enemas to bee sting therapy, and told The New York Times that she was “open to anything”.

“I’ve been stung by bees. It’s a thousand-year-old treatment called apitherapy,” she added. “People use it to get rid of inflammation and scarring. It’s actually pretty incredible if you research it. But, man, it’s painful.” The Goop founder shared that she was thankful there were so many wellness treatments on the market now, so people could discover what worked best for them.

“Wellness isn’t ‘one size fits all’; there are a lot of different treatments and modalities for a lot of different people,” she told Harper’s Bazaar. “And I just think it’s good for people to give themselves permission to ask questions and see what’s out there.”

Her wellness journey was partly inspired by her parents’ past health battles, as she told the publication.

Gwyneth has a family history of cancer

“My dad was diagnosed with cancer when he was only 54, and my mom has had some battles with cancer as well. So I am proactive in terms of having blood work looking for cancer markers, getting advanced imaging and all that kind of stuff.”

She is a fan of Pilates and the Tracy Anderson workout

“Once a year, I try to be really good about check-ups. There’s so much that we can know about ourselves through genetic testing.” The mom of two swears by meditation in the morning, followed by a Pilates workout or the Tracy Anderson workout, and several laps around her office before she sits down to work.

She also practices intermittent fasting to “rest the digestion”, and typically drinks a smoothie mid-morning.
