Hailey Bieber is opening up about one of her most personal and scary experiences. The 29-year-old model and businesswoman opened up about her pregnancy, which was made more complicated due to a condition she was diagnosed with.
Bieber was featured on the podcast She MD, hosted by Dr. Thaïs Aliabadi, who is also Bieber’s OB/GYN,
“It was a surprise. She told me this was going to happen because she was like…” said Hailey.
“And I told her like, ‘Don’t get pregnant!’” said Dr. Aliabadi. She then asked Bieber if she wanted to explain the condition she was diagnosed with.
“Yeah. So I had a septum in my uterus, and Dr. A kept saying, ‘Well, we need to look at this and keep an eye on it before you get pregnant because it could potentially be an issue,'” said Bieber. “‘I don’t really know. We’ve got to see. I might have to give you a small surgery for it. Not sure.’ And I was like, ‘Okay. Well, I’m not thinking about getting pregnant right now, so we’ll just cross that bridge when we get there.’ And then I magically got pregnant.”
“And then she calls me, and she’s like, ‘I’m pregnant!’ And I’m like, ‘No!’ ” said Dr. Aliabadi.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, a uterine septum is a congenital issue where a band of tissue divides the uterus. It’s a condition that can lead to miscarriages, intertility and preterm birth. The condition can be treated with surgery, restoring the normal shape of the uterus.
Bieber’s pregnancy and positivity
Dr. Aliabadi and Bieber shared more details of her pregnancy, with Aliabadi explaining more about the specifics of Bieber’s condition. “Yours was moderate,” she said. “It affects 1 to 3% of women, and with moderate, you have a higher risk of miscarriage during the pregnancy. And so the risk for her was about maybe 25 to 40% risk of miscarriage,” she continued. “And a 10 to 20% risk of preterm delivery.”
“Which I think was our bigger scare,” said Bieber. “Because we realized as the baby was growing, the septum it was, you know, expanding. Everything was opening and doing what it needed to do, luckily.”
Dr. Alibadi shared that Bieber was positive throughout the whole process. “And I never forget, as I was telling her, ‘Well, these are the risks.’ And she looked at me, she’s like, ‘You know what? I believe that everything’s gonna work out fine,’” said Dr. Alibadi.
Hailey and Justin Bieber welcomed their first child, Jack Blues Bieber, in August 2024. She shared the news by posting an adorable photo of her baby’s foot on Instagram.
