Halle Berry is stepping into a new chapter. After months of speculation, the Academy Award winner has officially confirmed she is engaged to longtime partner Van Hunt. During a Feb. 6 appearance on The Tonight Show, the Monster’s Ball actress set the record straight about rumors that she had rejected a proposal from the musician last year.
“There’s some confusion,” she told Jimmy Fallon. “It’s going around that I, that my guy Van Hunt—I’ve been dating him now for almost six years—well, there’s some confusion that he asked to marry me and I said no.”
She made it clear that that was not the case. “However, I did not say no,” Halle affirmed. “We just don’t have a date, but of course I said yes, I would marry him!” As Fallon congratulated her, the X-Men star added with a smile, “He did put a little ring on it.”
The ring briefly flashed on camera, and little might not be the most accurate description. The chunky gold band features black detailing and a diamond set on top, a bold and distinctive choice that reflects both their style and individuality.
From “On Hold” to Officially Engaged
Halle’s confirmation arrives eight months after Van revealed that he had already proposed but was still waiting for her answer. “So I put out the proposal, and it’s still on hold as you can see,” he shared during a joint interview with Halle for Today.com in June. “It’s just out there floating. You know, maybe you can encourage her.”
At the time, Halle explained her hesitation had nothing to do with doubt about their relationship. Instead, it was about perspective. “Well, I’ve been married three times,” Halle—previously wed to David Justice, Eric Benét, and Olivier Martinez—explained. “Van has been married once, and so no, we don’t feel like we have to get married to validate our love in any way. We don’t.”

Even without a wedding date, Halle was open about how meaningful this relationship has been. In fact, she hinted that Van may be the partner she was always meant to build a future with.
“But I think we will get married just because, out of the people I’ve been married to, this is the person I should have married,” she continued in the June interview. “And I feel like I should, we should get married, but it’s not because we feel like we have to. I think it’s something that we would like to do just because we want that expression.”

“Before we ever got together in any physical kind of way, I had fallen madly in love just through talking and telling and sharing every single thing,” she said during a joint appearance with Van on Today With Jenna & Friends in June. “All of our good, our bad, our dirty. We were completely honest.”
