Harrison Ford lives in Wyoming, where he is able to retreat from public view, but his home was once far larger than it is now.
The Indiana Jones star, 83, purchased a ranch in Jackson Hole on the Snake River in the early 1980s, and in 1985, he donated approximately half of his property as “conservation easements”. These are sections of land deemed as nature reserves to prevent substantial development that could otherwise harm the flora or fauna of the area.
Locals react to Harrison’s home project
It was a move that earned high praise from people working on the conservation site. “Back in the 1980s, very few people knew anything about conservation easements, and there were very few active land trusts,” Stephen Small, who helped author the tax code for conservation easements, told The Land Report magazine in 2007.
“But the Jackson Hole Land Trust was a pioneer in this regard [it was] the recipient of some early important easements. There were other landowners, including at least one longtime ranch family, who donated easements to the land trust around this period, but Harrison Ford was certainly known outside of Jackson and clearly was also a pioneer.”
Laurie Andrews, executive director of the Jackson Hole Land Trust, told the publication: “Back then, [Harrison Ford] was breaking new ground. For him to step forward and say, ‘This is win-win. It works for me, and it works for the land,’ you really can’t put a price on that.”
Harrison’s retreat away from prying eyes
When Harrison started this project, he was married to Melissa Mathison. However, in 2004, the pair split, and Harrison now lives on the ranch with actress Calista Flockhart, whom he married in 2010. The Star Wars actor is able to enjoy quiet time with his five children there and get out in nature.
Of his choice to live away from the bright lights of Hollywood, Harrison told Parade in 2020: “When I’m up in Wyoming, I just walk out the door and keep walking…if my chores are done and there’s nothing more pressing and the weather’s good, I’ll go flying – I love to fly up there – or walk in the woods, do some work, ride my road bike or mountain bike.”
That said, for the sake of convenience, he and Calista also maintain a residence in California. They paid $12.6 million for their Brentwood estate in 2011. It covers 13,767 square feet and boasts seven bedrooms and eight bathrooms.
