Hilary Duff is treating her Millennial fans. The singer and actress has been on her Lucky Me Tour, promoting her new album. At one of her sold-out performances in New York, Duff brought out some guests with whom she shares a personal history: her ex-boyfriend Joel Madden and his band, Good Charlotte.
Duff surprised fans at one of her sold-out shows at Madison Square Garden, with footage from fans showing her onstage wearing a vintage Good Charlotte band t-shirt. “New York, you know I would never come here and not have a surprise for you,” she said to the audience. “I brought two of my dearest friends to New York City tonight. Talk about some day oners.”
“Can you please give the warmest welcome to my friends Good Charlotte!” Duff then shared a hug with the members of her band, with her performing them on the song “The Anthem.”
© Gilbert FloresDuff and Madden were one of the era’s most memorable couples, dating from 2006 to 2008. The two represented the union of the pop and punk world, with Duff being one of the most influential pop stars and Good Charlotte being one of the biggest bands in the pop-punk movement.
The pair’s current partners, Matthew Koma and Nicole Richie, respectively, were in attendance at the concert. Her kids, Luca, Banks, Mae, and Townes, were also there to support Duff.
Benji Madden, Joel’s brother, shared a sweet story on his Instagram, showing Duff, Koma, the Madden brothers, and Richie huddled together for a selfie. “Family night,” he wrote. “Congrats, Hilary.”

Even though Duff and Madden dated for two years around 20 years ago, the pair have maintained a close friendship and remain a part of each other’s lives.
“I have a good relationship with their whole family,” said Duff on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen in 2023. “People are like, ‘What?’ We’re neighbors. We actually hang out all the time.”
Duff and Richie are close friends. “I was just in her driveway honking for her to come drink wine with us the other day,” she said.
“I think the whole world’s mind was blown for a second,” she added. Duff concluded that their bond is “lovely.”
