Disney+’s edge-of-your-seat crime drama, The Stolen Girl, starring Holliday Grainger, is coming to ITV – and if you haven’t already watched the five-part thriller, then you’re in for a treat.
The series, which first aired in April last year, follows ordinary couple Elisa and Fred, whose world shatters when their nine-year-old daughter vanishes from a sleepover.
If you’re looking for your next TV binge-watch, then ITV has got you covered. This nail-biting thriller is jam-packed with twists, turns and cliffhangers, which comes as no surprise considering its writer Catherine Moulton has credits on hit thrillers such as Hijack and Code of Silence. The show also comes from the makers of BAFTA-winning drama, Happy Valley.
Plus, having been filmed in Manchester and France, the show’s scenic backdrop is just as captivating as the lead cast’s brilliant performances.
Ahead of its launch on ITV on 25 February, find out all you need to know about the show below…
What is The Stolen Girl about?
Adapted by Catherine Moulton from the 2020 thriller Playdate by Alex Dahl, the story follows suburban parents Elisa (Denise Gough) and Fred Blix (Jim Sturgess), whose lives are turned upside down when their daughter, Lucia (Beatrice Cohen), goes missing from a sleepover with a school friend.
Elisa, an air hostess on private jets and busy mum-of-two, agrees to let Lucia go on a playdate with her new best friend, Josephine. When she briefly meets Josephine’s warm and glamorous mum, Rebecca, at the school gates, the playdate evolves into a sleepover.
But when Elisa and Fred arrive at Rebecca’s house the following day, their worst fears become a reality as their daughter is nowhere to be found.
What follows is a high-stakes cat-and-mouse chase across Europe, as Elisa discovers the shocking truth about her daughter’s disappearance.
The synopsis continues: “Exactly why did the enigmatic Rebecca Walsh (Holliday Grainger) take her daughter? Was Lucia a random target? What personal price will she have to pay to get her back? As Elisa starts to fit the pieces together, chaotically persistent journalist Selma Desai (Ambika Mod) reports live, relentlessly ripping apart her family life at every turn.
“Slowly the unsettling truth emerges – Rebecca didn’t want any child; she wanted Lucia – and what started as a textbook abduction is quickly evolving into something much darker…”
What have viewers and critics said about the show?
The series, which boasts an 87 per cent Rotten Tomatoes score, has been hailed as a “compelling” and “gripping” thriller by viewers.
Following its initial release in April last year, one person wrote on X: “I’ve just watched the first two episodes of ‘The Stolen Girl’ and I’m already hooked, line and sinker into the storyline. It looks like I’m going to be binge-watching this one for the next couple of days,” while another described the show as “very suspenseful,” adding, “Definitely bingeworthy and easy to knock over in a couple of days.”
A third viewer penned: “By the end of episode 1, it was clear that this 5-part series was going to be excellent.”
Meanwhile, the thriller received three and four-star reviews from TV critics, with The Times describing the series as a “gripping ride,” while The Standard hailed the show as a “tense, enjoyably twisty thriller”.
