Ryan Gosling is already seeing the starry Hollywood lights for his daughters with Eva Mendes…at least, behind the scenes.
The actor, 45, shares Esmeralda, 11, and Amada, nine, with longtime partner Eva, 51. While the pair keep their family life out of the spotlight, from time to time, they take the chance to gush about being parents.
Such was also the case when Ryan spoke about working on his latest project, the highly anticipated Project Hail Mary, and how his girls were involved.
Stepping up
In Project Hail Mary, based on the 2021 Andy Weir novel of the same name, Ryan plays astronaut Ryland Grace, who is left stranded on a space shuttle with no memory of how he got there, and a crew that is presumably dead.
Instead, his only companion is an alien he discovers on board, who he names “Rocky” (voiced by lead puppeteer James Ortiz). The prospect of not having an actual actor to bounce off of for those scenes proved to be difficult for the Oscar-nominated star, but that was until his daughters got involved.
“Sometimes when I was working and I needed to sort of switch things up or whatever, my kids would come in and I had an earpiece in my ear and they would talk for Rocky, so I could talk to them as Rocky,” he shared with People.
“And there’s some moments in the movie where I’m laughing or I’m just so charmed by him, which is like, it’s actually my kids talking to me and helping me out.”
His biggest critics
As it turns out, Esmeralda and Amada have already developed a keen eye for their dad’s work, which he previously said would serve him well when he was making 2023’s Barbie too.
“They’ve seen many cuts of this film,” he said of Project Hail Mary, adding that they’ve already given him “many notes,” including costuming advice. “When I was trying on stuff for the character and my daughter came by, and she was like, ‘You look smart in glasses.’ And I was like, ‘I need to look smart in this, so I will thank you for that.'”
In a previous interview with Access Hollywood, he shared the same insight into his daughters’ minds. “My kids have seen multiple cuts. They give me multiple notes. They’re basically the only critics I care about, and they are very critical and very honest.”
“I made this for them essentially,” he added. “As a family, I’d like a movie like this that I’d like to see. I just feel really honored that I got to make one.”
More on Project Hail Mary
Set for a March 20 theatrical release, Project Hail Mary also stars Sandra Hüller, who coincidentally earned her own Oscar nod for Anatomy of a Fall the same year Ryan did for Barbie.
Also in the cast are Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung, Milana Vayntrub and Priya Kansara. Filmmaking duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are at the helm of the project. And based on early reviews, the film is already earning positive buzz.
