If you own a white dressing gown, I guarantee that the collar looks dirtier than the inside of your makeup bag (no judgment). While smeared garments in your bathroom aren’t exactly a sartorial crisis, on the red carpet, there’s no room for such errors. As fashion feats go, there’s nothing more unforgiving than a crisp white shirt or T-shirt – especially at this time of year, when lighter colours are on constant rotation. One wrong move and you’re left with tell-tale foundation marks. And yet, celebrities such as Geri Horner-Halliwell and Zendaya make it look entirely fool-proof. Zendaya, in particular, is firmly in her ‘bridal era’, stepping out at press junkets and front rows alike with her whites (Louis Vuitton and Chanel, no less) remaining impossibly pristine – no transfer, no touch-ups, no evidence of makeup.
Prep Is Everything
So what’s the trick? According to the pros, it’s less about going minimal and more about strategic prep, clever layering, and formulas that genuinely stay put. Consider this the white shirt test, passed with flying colours.
Makeup artist Phoebe Alana Brown swears the answer starts with restraint. “Less is more,” she says, advising a deliberately light hand to avoid product build-up where it matters most. Her approach is all about skin prep that creates slip without heaviness – hydration is key so that makeup doesn’t cling to dry patches or break apart throughout the day. “I love prepping the skin with Chanel Hydra Beauty Camellia Water Cream, £55, which hydrates and adds a radiant glow to the skin.”
Strategic Application
Application placement is just as important. Brown concentrates foundation at the centre of the face, blending outwards to keep coverage where it’s needed and avoid excess product gathering along the jawline – a common culprit for transfer – something beauty entrepreneur Trinny Woodall considers, too. “Apply foundation only where you need it,” she says in a recent Instagram reel, pointing again to the centre of the face, and skipping the jawline entirely when wearing white, which gives not just a cleaner collar, but fresher-looking skin, too.
The Art Of Layering
For contour, Brown favours formulas that melt into the skin rather than sit on top, favouring Westman Atelier Face Trace Contour Stick, £35.20, “as it blends to create a ‘second skin’ effect which sets beautifully and stays where you need it to.” The key is patience: “allow each layer to properly settle before adding the next, and resist the urge to over-apply,” recommends Brown. It’s this kind of controlled layering that makes the difference between makeup that melts into clothes and makeup that stays exactly where you put it.
Locking It In
Setting is non-negotiable, but again, it’s targeted. Translucent powder works best when it’s pressed into the skin rather than swept on. We like Refy’s Skin Finish Setting Powder, £22, which helps to properly anchor foundation, especially around high-friction areas like the sides of the chin and jaw. If you prefer a more skin-like finish, L’Oreal Paris’ new Infallible 3-Second Setting Spray, £9.99, does the same job more lightly, sealing makeup without adding weight. And for areas beyond the face, think shoulders, décolletage or even legs, Brown relies on sheer, water-based foundations that dry down to a transfer-resistant finish, offering coverage without the risk, with MAC Studio Face and Body Radiant Sheer Foundation, £34, her go-to.
Backstage Tricks That Work
On photoshoots, stylist Fatima Truscott takes a similarly meticulous approach—but hers is all about timing and protection. Her go-to trick is a large silk scarf placed over the face as a full veil when getting dressed. It’s a simple barrier, but an effective one, and she keeps one in her kit at all times. For added insurance, she suggests lightly misting the neckline area of a white garment with a dry hairspray—something like Elnett, £6—to create a subtle shield. And if the worst does happen? Act fast. Micellar water, applied immediately, can lift fresh makeup stains before they set.
The (Imperceptible) Takeaway
To keep your whites white, it’s not about wearing less makeup, but wearing it smarter. Thoughtful placement, lightweight layers, and a little backstage ingenuity are what stand between you and a spotless white shirt. Zendaya just happens to make it look effortless.
