If your daily social media scroll is starting to feel uninspiring, allow us to introduce your new favourite online breath of fresh air: Vivienne Truran.
Known to her massive digital fanbase as “Viv the Carer,” this 82-year-old Welsh force of nature isn’t here to sell you luxury labels or preach about how to look twenty years younger. She’s here to adjust her statement specs, throw on her favourite patterned trousers, and remind the world that getting dressed should be all about having fun.
After a career in the civil service and British Telecom, Viv is now in her third act: A fashion influencer.
With over 820k Instagram followers, Viv didn’t sit down one day with a strategy to become an internet style icon; her fashion renaissance was born out of a desire to reclaim her own spark after a heavy couple of years.
“It was post Covid when we had our freedom back and I could get out and about enjoying the outdoors and socialising with my friends,” Viv explains. “I’d lost my husband and started to concentrate on myself.”
That newfound freedom quickly turned into a love affair with loud colours and vibrant prints. Forget dressing “age-appropriate”. When we asked Viv to describe the outfit that best captures her spirit, she didn’t hesitate: “It would be something bright – a pair of check trousers and a bright sweater – of course I’d need a pair of my signature glasses.”
Viv calls out the biggest misconception people hold about fashion and ageing without missing a beat: “That they can’t keep up with the times – they don’t need to hide away in the corner. People expect older ladies to conform to the idea of what they think older ladies should look like.”
Spoiler alert: Viv is definitely not conforming. And that’s why Gen Z and Millennials are throwing endless praise into her comment section right alongside her peers. In an online landscape where fashion often feels intimidating, Viv brings high-energy authenticity and proves you don’t need a designer bank account to look incredible.
“It’s the fact that youngsters have looked at me for inspiration and confidence,” Viv says of her multi-generational following. “What’s surprising is they’re looking for something alternative to the mainstream of their age. I think that my outfits are easy to achieve! You don’t need to be spending a fortune or have designer brands.”
So, what if you’re currently staring into a wardrobe full of dull neutrals, feeling stuck in a rut and mildly terrified to wear that bold jacket? Viv has some refreshingly direct advice to kickstart your inner fashionista.
“Look at things with a different perspective,” she urges. “Break away from routine and try something different. Don’t worry about what other people will say or think!”
At 82, Viv the Carer is living proof that the opinions of strangers is none of your business. Life is simply too short to dress for anyone but yourself.
