Howie Mandel has broken his silence following an uncomfortable moment on morning television, issuing a surprisingly candid, and characteristically humorous, apology to Kelly Ripa after their awkward on-air exchange.

The comedian, 70, took to Instagram to address the situation directly, admitting he had spent days debating whether to speak out at all.

“Okay. I have been debating for 48 hours whether I should make this post or not. And I don’t know if I’m doing the right thing,” he began in the video.

Known for his decades-long career in comedy, Howie acknowledged that apologizing doesn’t come naturally to him.

“Philosophically, I don’t believe that somebody needs to, somebody who’s a comedian, needs to apologize for a joke.

It is a joke. It is meant as a joke. And it’s not meant to offend. It’s not meant to, you know, you cannot like it. And in all my years, 50 years in the business, I haven’t, I haven’t ever publicly kind of apologized for it.”

But despite his reservations, the America’s Got Talent judge made it clear this situation was different, especially given his long-standing relationship with Kelly.

“So this is hard for me. But this is for Kelly Ripa, who in the past has been incredibly supportive,” he continued. “Not only have I been a guest on her show, but I have, I’ve co-hosted with her and I’ve known her for years. And Michael Gelman, who is a really close friend, is the producer of the show.”

The apology comes after a tense moment unfolded during Monday’s episode of Live with Kelly and Mark, where Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos found themselves navigating an unexpectedly sensitive exchange with their guest.

While discussing Howie’s age, he turned 70 in November,  the conversation took a turn when Kelly complimented him on how he looked.

“It doesn’t make any sense,” Kelly began, before Howie quickly interjected: “What do you mean it doesn’t make any sense? That I look great?”

Kelly clarified, “We’re not saying you look great for 70. We’re saying you look great, and I don’t believe you’re 70.”

But Howie pushed back, clearly uncomfortable with the phrasing. “No. no. I don’t like that because that’s a caveat. When you tell someone you’re 70, and they say you look great… It’s like saying you’re smart for a stupid person,” he said, leaving the hosts momentarily stunned.

Despite the awkwardness, the segment moved on, with Howie later explaining his fitness routine, crediting actor Jerry O’Connell for introducing him to an intense swimming workout involving resistance cables and paddles.

Still, the moment clearly lingered, prompting his reflective social media post. “And when I go out there, I just try to be entertaining and funny. And sometimes as a comedian, things don’t land the way you mean them to land,” he admitted.

Then came the most unexpected part of his apology, one that blended sincerity with his trademark humor.

“And I don’t know how to say this, but not only do I want to say I’m sorry to Kelly, but, and this is the hardest part, you’re right.

“You’re absolutely right. And, uh, I’m sorry, I didn’t see it that way, but after a lot of thought and self, self-reflection, I, uh, I do, I look great for my age. I really do. I really, I really, I look fantastic,” he added.
