Infanta Sofía is steadily carving out her place within the Spanish monarchy. At 18, the teen royal is pursuing a degree in Political Science and International Relations at Forward College as her official responsibilities become increasingly visible. Choosing to study in Portugal was a strategic decision for Sofía, designed to allow her gradual incorporation into the official agenda of the Crown while continuing her academic formation.
Now, the young royal has taken on a significant new responsibility. Sofía will assume the role of honorary president of the “Docentes Referentes” (Leading Educators) program launched by Fundación Ibercaja.
The national initiative recognizes and highlights teachers who are transforming education across Spain, celebrating those who inspire excellence and innovation in classrooms at a pivotal moment for the country’s educational future.
The appointment further strengthens the connection between the Spanish Crown and promoting education. It also comes during the 150th anniversary year of Fundación Ibercaja, adding institutional weight to Sofía’s new role.
According to the Spanish newspaper ABC, her honorary presidency will formally be celebrated before the summer at a ceremony awarding program grants, in a public appearance that is expected to underscore the importance of the initiative and her growing presence within royal life.
This milestone follows other prominent appearances. Earlier this year, Sofía carried out her first solo engagement, visiting a guide dog breeding and training center operated by ONCE near Madrid. The visit offered a softer glimpse of the royal, surrounded by puppies, while also reinforcing the monarchy’s key support of social initiatives and inclusion.
Sofía’s rising royal profile
Sofía’s official profile has expanded notably since reaching adulthood and relocating to Portugal. In October, she participated for the first time in the reception held at Madrid’s Royal Palace during Spain’s National Day celebrations on October 12, a key moment in the royal calendar. In December 2024, she presided over the Objetivo Patrimonio Photography Awards ceremony, an event that marked her first time leading an act alone.
Beyond institutional duties, Sofía has also been seen supporting her family during important moments. She accompanied her grandmother, Queen Sofía, during farewell tributes in Madrid and Athens dedicated to Princess Irene of Greece, showing her growing comfort in balancing public responsibility with private family commitments.
As Infanta Sofía continues her university studies abroad, her assumption of an honorary presidency signals her evolution. She is no longer simply the younger daughter of King Felipe VI, but an emerging figure that’s beginning to define her own institutional identity.
