Bruce Campbell plans to be “around a while,” despite his recent cancer diagnosis.
The The Evil Dead actor, 67, took to Twitter (now X) on Monday, March 2, to reveal his cancer diagnosis; though he didn’t specify the kind of cancer he had, he described it as “treatable” but not “curable.”
“Hi folks, these days, when someone is having a health issue, it’s referred to as an “opportunity,” so let’s go with that — I’m having one of those. It’s also called a type of cancer that’s “treatable” not “curable.” I apologize if that’s a shock — it was to me too,” he first wrote.
“The good news is, I’m not gonna go into any more detail. I’m posting this, because professionally, a few things will have to change — appearances and cons and work in general need to take back seat to treatment,” he noted, emphasizing his hopes of being well enough by the summer so as to promote his new movie, Ernie & Emma.
“There are several cons this year summer that I have to cancel. Big regrets on my part. Treatment needs and professional obligations don’t always go hand-in-hand,” he further shared, adding: “That’s about it. I’m not trying [to] enlist sympathy — or advice — I just want to get ahead of this information in case false information gets out (which it will).”
“Fear not, I am a tough old son-of-a-[expletive] and I have great support, so I expect to be around a while,” he concluded.
Bruce is largely private about his personal life, but here is what we know.
Bruce’s two marriages
Though little is known about Bruce’s first marriage, he was married to Christine Deveau from 1983 to 1989.
While working on the post-apocalyptic science fiction film Mindwarp, which premiered in 1992, Bruce met his now wife Ida Gearon, who he married in 1991. She is a costume designer, and though per her IMDb, she last worked on Necronomicon: Book of Dead in 1993, her first film dates back to 1988, and her other credits include Tales From the Dark Side: The Movie (1990) and Army of Darkness (1992).
Bruce told the Toledo Blade in 2012 that in 1998, he moved to Jacksonville, Oregon and “bought [a] piece of property, made a couple movies, wrote a couple books.”
He is a father to two kids
Bruce welcomed two children with his first wife Christine, daughter Rebecca and son Andy.
Though they both lead largely private lives, and little is known about Rebecca specifically, per Andy’s X account, he is a Twitch partner, a CapCom USA creator, and is married to writer and gamer Janel Santa Cruz.
Bruce’s life away from Hollywood
Bruce, who made his screen debut in the late 1970s, has never actually had a taste for Hollywood, despite his work in it. He also recalled to the Toledo Blade in 2012 of his move to Oregon: “I said, ‘I’m going to run my own show, nobody’s telling me what to do’ Very defiant. You know, I never went to Hollywood parties. I couldn’t tell you the names of three casting agents in this entire city. I never understood what that had to do with your actual work. It drives me insane.”
“I watch an actor or actress get to a certain point, then they disappear because they’re doing a clothing line and a fragrance. Where’d the acting go? Why aren’t you acting anymore? It’s like they get tired of it. They just want to make the easy money. So I moved out, spent five or six years doing my own thing,” he added.
