Fred Rogers is a cultural icon. The television personality and host of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood changed the lives of children across America. Over 20 years after Fred’s passing, his legacy lives on through his two sons and spinoffs of his groundbreaking show.
Fred died on February 27, 2003 at 74 after changing millions of kids’ lives. Throughout his life, the television host covered taboo topics all while really understanding children’s feelings. Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood ran for 31 seasons and aired 912 episodes.

A few years after James was born, Fred and Joanne welcomed John. Like his big brother, he appeared in a few episodes of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood as a kid, but lives a private life in his adulthood.
In 2018, John appeared in a documentary about his father’s legacy, Won’t You Be My Neighbor. A year later, Fred’s son opened up about his dad saying: “[His] impact is unexplainable. I talk about shelf life, and it’s hard to believe that 16-and-a-half years later, his work is still…monumentous.”

In 2012, a spin-off of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood premiered on PBS Kids. Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood is based on Fred’s work and uses the same theme music from the original show.
The animated show follows Daniel Tiger, his parents Mom Tiger and Dad Tiger, and his many friends in the neighborhood. Like Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood covers important topics and teaches emotional intelligence, kindness, and human respect.

15 years after Fred passed away, a documentary about his life was released at the Sundance Film Festival. With appearances by Joanne, John, and Jim, Won’t You Be My Neighbor examines the life and legacy of Fred and his beloved television show.
The documentary was well received, becoming the highest-grossing documentary in 2018 and earning an Independent Spirit Award for Best Documentary Feature.

A year after Won’t You Be My Neighbor was released, a biopic on Fred’s life starring Tom Hanks premiered. A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood follows Fred – played by Tom – and Lloyd Vogel, an investigative journalist played by Matthew Rhys, as he profiles the TV host.
While Lloyd approaches Fred with an initial sense of skepticism, Mr. Rogers’ optimism and empathy chips away at his jaded facade. For his portrayal of Fred, Tom was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards, Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice, and Screen Actors Guild.
