Melania Trump has not been seen in public in a month, with the First Lady’s last appearance being at the FIFA World Cup Final in New Jersey on July 19.

The 56-year-old appears to have taken a step back from White House duties over the summer, and skipped both Senator Lindsey Graham’s funeral on July 28 and the White House Correspondents’ Dinner four days prior.

Before her World Cup appearance, Melania was seen at the July 4 Salute to America 250 event on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. According to reports, she has only made 38 public appearances in 2026 so far, compared to 47 in 2025 after her husband’s inauguration.

Her disappearance has sparked concern amongst White House watchers, and even TV host Jimmy Fallon spoke on his show, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, about her absence from public life.

A senior advisor to Melania told NBC News that the mother of one “prioritizes results over appearances”, in response to questions over her lengthy absence.

Despite her disappearance, Melania has been working behind the scenes on an initiative involving families caught in the middle of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Her team announced on social media that “First Lady Melania Trump facilitated the reunification of another child with her family on Monday, August 17, 2026, after being separated during the Ukraine – Russia Federation conflict.”

“There is nothing more powerful than reuniting a mother with her child after an extended period of time,” Melania then wrote.

“My representative and I are focused on helping facilitate the next reunification of individuals who have been separated from their loved ones because of the war between Ukraine and Russia.”

The statement continued: “To date, First Lady Melania Trump’s efforts have facilitated the reunification of 34 children and families since she penned the Peace Letter to Russia’s President Vladimir Putin.”

In comparison to previous First Ladies, like Michelle Obama and Laura Bush, Melania is seemingly less involved in her husband’s presidency. Anthony Scaramucci, who served as the White House Communications Director in 2017, shared on The Daily Beast Podcast that he believed that Donald Trump and Melania had “grown apart” and were distant with each other.

“The family unit that came into Trump 1.0 didn’t like it. They didn’t like the blistering in Washington. They didn’t like the 360-degree firing squad. I don’t think they like the spotlight that was put on them,” he explained. “I think that when he ran again, they all more or less said, ‘Okay, you know, that one was on all of us; this one’s on you.”

Donald’s eldest daughter, Ivanka Trump, stepped back from politics in 2022 after serving as one of his advisors during his first term in the White House. “I love policy and impact. I hate politics. And unfortunately, the two are not separable,” she shared on the Him & Her Show podcast in 2025. “There is a darkness to that world that I don’t really want to welcome into mine.”

“To some degree, I’m at the center of the storm because my father is about to be president, but it’s a very dark, negative business. And some people love the gladiator aspect of it – the fight. That was never me,” she continued. “I think I’m most looking forward to just being able to show up for him as a daughter and be there for him to take his mind off things, to watch a movie with him, or watch a sports game.”
